On Tuesday night we had a short lived monsoon hit the Bay Area, thunder, raindrops the size of basketballs, the whole deal.  Just as this was starting I was setting up an overnight pen for a bunny that was going to get spayed the next day.  I went into the back yard to get something, and then I let Marilyn and the babies into their XPen for some run around time.  I put the girls to bed, and as I was walking past the living room, I glanced at the XPen.  1, 2, 3 …  oh oh, supposed to be 4 bunnies in there, yikes Marilyn is out.  She gets out all the time, she’s an escape artist.  I look across the room, and there is Marilyn and right behind her is the sliding door to the outside WIDE OPEN.  I think my heart skipped three beats.  I was able to slowly get around behind her, and she decided to run toward the babies who were still in the pen.  I quickly closed the door and herded her back into the pen.  Note to self: CLOSE THE @#$%^ DOOR!

Uh, oh :~) got to watch that Marilyn. I’m glad you were able to corral her back in – what a relief.

I think you can add girl buns whose names begin with “C” to the list of escape artists. Cadbury has escaped from every xpen I’ve had, except the one I have now – because it’s 4′ tall!!!

It’s not a cage or an xpen-ITS A CHALLENGE lol!! darned escape bunnies!!

I was blowdrying kokanee’s bum (when her poopybum was out of control) and she was chapped with me and she lept up on the wall and bounced off of it to get over a gate and away from me and the blowdrier (ordinariliy she couldn’t just hop over the gate)…It was pretty amazing!

Holly has been an escape artist in the past. We fixed it so she can’t be one now, but oh how she tries.  I used to call her brain (as in pinky in the brain) She was always trying to conquer getting out of her pen.  She still does, but is more relaxed about it now.

I certainly know what that feels like, rabbits sure are clever little devils.

My babies climb on top of the condo now, but the silly rascals can’t get back down.

The closest I came to this experience was when Mimzy was first home with me. we’d made him a beautiful hutch for his outdoor “Bun-galow.” The whole top opens up so I could lift him in his pet carrier to enter and leave the hutch, as I had no idea at the time how to handle a bunny, but had heard that their backs are extremely fragile. SO you can imagine my horror when, after putting him away for the evening, I was putting some bedding in for him and it startled him, so he went OVER the top of the open hutch in a huge SPROING and landed with a solid thump on the floor, at least FOUR FEET BELOW! (I’m 5’4″ and the top of the hutch comes to my armpits.) I tearfully looked him over and thoroughly checked for any injury and then placed him back in his hutch without incident. He was fine, but MAN, that scared the expletive deleted out of me!
(At the time, I also thought he was a girl and, since he’d been dropped with two male buns, I was afraid there might be a litter that just might’ve been lost in that fall…my blood pressure must be astronomically high by now!)
He also used to dig furiously at his enclosure out there and I was always frightened he was going to dig a hole and break out. Little ex-con bun…needless to say he gets a more secure enclosure this year!
