My 2 guinea pigs have been diagnosed with mange mites (don’t know how they got it) and are being treated by vet, shampood by me and being changed on treatment days (weekly treatments). They are in their own cage at one end of our house. We wash our hands anytime we do anything with the guinea’s and wear gloves when handling them.
My 2 bunnies are in their own cage at the other end of the house. One bunny is starting to get really itchy, and love it when we scratch her back (where she can’t reach). I noticed tonight when I was giving her a good scritch that some tufts of fur (with flakes of skin attatched) were coming off of her. Now I’m worried that somehow the mites have gotten onto her. I can’t even imagine having to give her those nasty sulfer baths with the way the 2 bunnies groom each other.
How should the vet treat her? He’s a small town vet that sees more cats and dogs than bunnies and guineas. it took three trips to see him before he diagnosed the guineas (skin scrapings twice), the poor guineas had lost about 10-15% of their fur before proper diagnoses. He’s giving them shots (one more set left), but I know they are painful, and can’t see putting another set of animals thru that if I can help it.
Any advice or recommendations?
Thanks!
Edit: I feel I need to clarify that I am looking for advice about the rabbits….ie: an alternative to subjecting them to the painful shots the guineas have gone thru. I was not looking for advice on the guineas. Sorry, I wasn’t sure if I was making that clear.
