So I went through routine grooming yesterday and noticed Sherlock’s teeth were crooked. I double checked today and sure enough they don’t align correctly and so his bottom incisors are actually diagonal. I’m aware that I could get his teeth routinely trimmed but that sounds like quite the hassle and stressor so I was wondering if anyone has gotten their rabbit’s teeth removed, around how much the treatment costs, the healing process, and if it has in anyway negatively affected diets.

The good news is he is probably going to hit puberty soon so hopefully I can schedule any procedures to be done at the same time as the neutering and save myself the money of putting him under twice and also save him the stress of going under twice.

Any advice or comments would be helpful

If it is just the front teeth that are the problem, they can be easily clipped by the vet. No anesthesia required, so it usually doesn’t cost very much. There are some members on here who have a rabbit with front teeth that were really bad so they decided to have them removed. Not sure about cost. Sorry I can’t be more help.

If necessary, routine clipping is an option, as is extraction. I would recommend speaking to your vet about this.

As LBJ10 said, anesthesia shouldn’t be necessary to clip the front incisors. I’ve seen members quote front teeth clipping prices as low as $10-15, basically the cost of a nail trim. Dental extractions tend to be very pricy however. It is not easy to extract rabbit teeth bc the vet has to make sure they remove all of the tooth AND origination cells that continue to, for lack of a better word, “regenerate” the teeth. Extraction surgeries do vary in price, but I think the prices I’ve seen have been in the $500-1000 range.

I think it would be a good idea to get those price quotes from your vet. This info may help steer you one way or another. If the clipping cost is minimal, extraction seems like it would be overkill.

You also don’t know how quickly the teeth will grow, or if, although crooked, they may still grind down. My recommendation would be to have them clipped a few times and see how it goes. Don’t rush into extraction.

When Bella had insisor maliclusion, I took her in once a month for a teeth trim. It only took about ten minutes, and they only charged me 10 dollars!

I’ll definitely be waiting a little bit to see if getting the teeth removal can be avoided, I just wanted to get somewhat of a picture of what my options would look like in the future if it all goes downhill. I’m really hoping his teeth take care of themselves but one can only hope I suppose. Thank you guys!

One of my rabbits has had his incisors removed three times, and unfortunately they have grown back yet again. His teeth are very poor and snap easily though which is why we remove them. In the UK it is approximately £75 for removal.

I am not a fan of removing an animal’s teeth unless there isn’t another option to keep the animal healthy. Routine trimming is not expensive and, not particularly stressful on the rabbit. They get used to the routine and, it isn’t a big deal to go have the teeth trimmed.

Cost really does depend on your location and the only way to find out is to see the vet and have the vet look at the teeth. I can tell you that regular trimmings for my rabbit Bobby’s molars are not cheap at all – not sure how much it would be for incisors but I suspect it wouldn’t be any cheaper.

I think first things first is to have the vet take a look at the teeth to determine if they are truly maloccluded.
