malocclusion bunny toothless wonder

My lionhead Max had malocclusion of the front teeth just before his first birthday. I was facing monthly vet visits to trim (grind, cut, I can’t remember) that involved him having to be put under general anesthetic. Due to this the cost was outrageous.

Feeling as though I had no other option I had Max’s teeth removed. It was been over a year and I haven’t looked back. He was back to eating regular food the day of the surgery. We had one feeding with critical care and a syringe and we both decided that was enough!

Generally I feel like his quality of life has been great since. He has no trouble with kibble or hay. I do have to dice his fruits and veggies but that is hardly a problem.  No teeth has its bonuses (no more destroyed carpet and furniture) but I still feel bad he had all those complications and ended up toothless!

I was wondering what other people’s experiences are with malocclusion and toothless bunnies. Has anyone else opted to leave their rabbits teeth in and have them trimmed?

There is another member, Kingoblin (?) something like that who’s rabbit has had his incisors removed and she’s glad she did that. I know we’ve had others as well, but I cannot think of who they are – Kingoblin is the one that comes to mind recently.

My rabbit Bobby has not left lower molars but he still has his incisors. Unfortunately I still must get his molars trimmed every 2 to 3 months. He lost his back teeth due to a bad abscesses – he was dumped at a guinea pig rescue (literally in the front of the house in his cage) and most likely because he wasn’t eating due to his dental problems. Luckily they had a very good vet who treated his abscess and he’s a happy little rabbit to this day.

A lot of people do choose to get their teeth trimmed regularly. I agree that financially, regular trimmings are a major expense. I think if I were to have a young rabbit with malocclusion, and was facing 10+ years of trims, I would likely seek getting the offending teeth removed. You need to weigh the cost of the removal (which is typically several times that of trims), and wanting the best for your bun!

The removal cost $500.00 where a single trim was in the ball park of $150.00 per trip (4-6 weeks). I was also concerned with him being put under that often as I had read that it can shorten their lives.
