Hey all! My name is Asria. I just started Binky Bunny to ensure I am raising my boys corectly.

My qustion here is that my boys won’t stop humping. I’ve had them since they were 5 weeks old and there around 2 1/2  years of age now. At first I had them in one big cage )( 20 square feet not includding two levels, free range times, and outside pen.)( but when they turned one they began to mount each and conflict each other little wounds.

I read up on how they were trying to dominate each other. Will it ever stop? I have them both in hafts of the cage about ten square feet each. I’ve never seen them fight. They just take turns humping. So what can I do without the risk of surgeory for my boys? I want to let them to have the full cage but they will hump untill they can’t hump anymore. )( rather funny to watch. dad calls them gay bunnys >.<)( They have been split for 1 1/2 years with meetings every so often.

Should I just let them hump untill one gives up? It’s realy tireing having to take one bunny out for play and leave the other in and than switch. I want them to be able to play like they use to when they were younger. Now they just hump. No attacking. Just humping. and yes, They are both males. ^.^

if it’s been this long, they’ll probably continue to hump until they’re both neutered.  does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Do you think I should put them together and see if at any time do one ever says “I’m the boss” Also, Do bunnys spray like cats?

the humping has a lot to do with determining who’s the boss and yes they can and will spray like cats to mark their territory.  i don’t think the dominance thing will necessarily be figured out all of a sudden.  form what i understand, it would be a regular struggle.  one might be boss one moment, but then the other could come back ten minutes alter and try to assert his dominance.  even altered rabbits will fight for dominance sometimes, which is why there’s a whole bonding process that usually needs to be done.

                Yes bunnies do spray.

Oh boy, well, the fact that they are not neutered does make this extremely challening. I mean you are asking for them to control their hormones, and that really is impossible.

Do they both try to mount each other, or does one usually mount the other.

You should start from scratch and see if you can get them officially bonded. Check out the bonding page for instructions.
Regarding the mounting. Let them mount only if the one being mounted allows it without fighting. But also only let mounting happen for 20 seconds and then push the mounter off for a minute or two and let him mount again. When you say they nip, are they nipping while mounting or do they chase each other and grab fur off each other. Have they ever gotten into a real fight?

So it seems you are worried about the “risks” of surgery. What is it that you have have been told that makes you feel it’s too risky?

My boys will like battle each other out trying to mount. They don’t nip just grab on sometimes and thats why they get little wounds. It’s more like ever other second they are trying to dom each other.

I am going to try and see if they will bond again. They use to be such good buddies! but this whole problem of them mounting has drawn me and my boys apart. They are now almost scared of me when I catch them/ bring them in/feed them etc etc etc. I realy miss being able to lay on the floor and have them come and cuddle.

They havn’t gotten in a real fight thank the goddess.

The reason why I’m worried about surgery is that one of my cats was geting netured and he died when he was under. Bunnys are small and I’m scared that something might happen. I looked it up and they said that One out of fifty bunnies die during simple surgery due to the anastia. Thats a big percentage..Or maybe its just me being over protective?

Also, I heard that nutering usualy costs over 200 bucks. Their is no way I could aford it. Maybe a hundred or so but not over two hundred. But I’m trying to find ways around nutering, anbd if i can’t than i’ll see what the spca has to offer in the city two or so hours from me.

My boy just got neutered yesterday and everything went perfectly. It only cost $149.68 with everything. I would say as long as you have a rabbit savy vet it shouldn’t be something you need worry much about. It is  about your kitty though.

Oh? I wish I lived near you. ^.^

Okay how’s this everyone. I’ll call the only place I know who does exotics and ask the price.

It was so unexspected too! He was my first kitten in a long time and I brought him in and than went to school. I go back to get my kittie and find out he had died. My day went from heaven to like hell. I don’t blame the vet though. He had been such a good vet to us better than the bets nearer to us. I’m just scared that more freak accidents happen. They always seem to follow me.

i’m sorry about your cat.  that’s really sad.  it was probably not even the vets fault… maybe your cat just could not handle the surgery.  there’s always a risk in surgery (which is what i had to tell myself when my bunny girl was going in…) but the benefits are (in most cases) you end up having a much more loving pet, and your time together is more enjoyable.  i’ve had animals before where that bond (human-animal bond) was not there… and it’s sad to say, but it makes their care seem more like a chore than anything else.  almost like… what am i getting in return?  obviously that’s not the only reason to have an animal… but it helps.

Asria – I’d also highly recommend getting them neutered, in addition to working with them to try and rebond them.

I am very sorry to hear about your kitten, but that kind of accident is rare, but can happen. Rabbit neuters are not nearly as invasive of a procedure, compared to some others.

there are some low cost spay programs in some places – where do you live?

One of the biggest issues with rabbits in any surgery is that they are more sensitive to anesthesia, so not having too much and not being under for too long is extrememly important.  Not all vets know how to finesse this, so that’s why finding a rabbit savvy vet is very important.   This link from the House Rabbit Society is a great resource to help you figure out how to find a good vet. http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/vet.html

I have a large Amercan sable and a dewarf they it took sometime but they bonded now the large one won’t stop humping the little one I have had to seperate them most of the time. I highly recommend neutering or spaying. A couple of years ago I had a bunny that was my therapy animal I took him everywhere and spent hours holding him like a baby. He got testicular cancer and even though I got him fixed then it spread to his leg. I was told it would have to be amputated or he would need chemo therapy. The vet did not think either was a good option. I later learned they live 7 years unfixed or as long as 12 fixed
