Hi, I have a male rabbit. My family and I have had him for a few months now and over the past few days he’s started to show some strange behaviour.

He demands more attention now, we give him a few head rubs and when we stop he resorts to biting and nipping us quite hard.

Along with the biting comes the excessive licking. I would say that I’m the one he’s most comfortable with so he licks me all the time, and it gets annoying at times. He’ll lick my hands, arms, neck, face. I’m wondering if this is a territorial thing or if he does it for the salt.

He recently started honking too, it’s a weird sound yet cute and adorable at the same time. He’ll honk when he comes up to lay down with me or demand attention or when he’s scared of something and his pupils enlarge.

Another thing I noticed last night was that he started to do what looked like grinding against his blanket. He was on all fours, legs splayed out behind him and his legs almost looked as if they were having a seizure, or they were twitching/shaking very rapidly.

Is this a sign that he should be neutered?

He’s hit puberty and is feeling amorous. 🙂

Pretty much everything you described is him preparing to mount or actually mounting. So yep, sounds like it’s time for the snip!

Agree that honking is adorable and hilarious. My neutered 12 year old bun still honks and he sounds like a tiny pig. 😀

Don’t be surprised if he starts spraying as well…. at you. Keep your mouth closed, haha. You may also see the ceremonious binky + spray combo, where urine flies everywhere as the rabbit twists in the air!

Again, as stated above, nothing against you or your family. He is doing what his hormones are telling him to do, which is spread his scent.
