        Hi everyone,

Luna has been at the emergency vet clinic with what we believe to be GI stasis since 8PM Friday Feb 22nd. This is her first time having it and I wanted a place where I could talk to other rabbit owners as it is a stressful time for us. It has been about 24 hours now since she has gone in the litter-box. She is under the care of a rabbit savy vet, but any guidance about how the next couple days might be for us would be greatly appreciated. Especially if you have been through something similar.

        First Day:

In the morning she was eating her morning pellets, veggies, and hay as normal.

4PM Luna gets her nails trimmed – it is successful, she eats 2 cups of cilantro after/during as her evening veggies

4:30PM Her litter box is changed

5PM We vacuum our apartment for around an hour – she hides in her hidey-house as the noise is loud, she stays in there after we are finished (we assume she is taking a nap)

7:30PM While cleaning her area I notice she is shaking in her hidey-house (very unusual), we try to fed her the evening pellets, but she won’t run for them or eat any, she refuses to eat treats or veggies, she has only done 4 poops and a small pee since her litter box has been changed

8PM Arrive at after hours vet clinic

10PM She is seen, they suspect GI Stasis, they take her for the night to give her sub-q fluids, pain meds, and critical care

        Second Day:

10AM: Vet update, she has not peed/pooped, basic blood tests are normal, she is alert and hoping around, she only accepts about 5 mL of critical care and a few bites of lettuce so she hasn’t been eating much, they have given her pain meds, her teeth look great

2PM: Vet update, she has not peed/pooped, the vet thinks that she is too nervous to go to the bathroom at the vets and suggest we come to visit at 6PM to try to feed her.

UPDATE: 6PM: We visited Luna, she wouldn’t take any of the food we brought her, she only had a few mLs of critical care, although she was interested in some of the sounds and smells of the food. She started to pee now so we think she has figured out how to use the litter box. She was tossing some of the newspaper in her cage. She will be kept overnight to receive pain meds and critical care.

        Third Day:

UPDATE: 10AM: Vet update, over the night she started to eat again and had around 40 poops. She will be monitored at the vet during the day, but we have decided against x-rays to prevent any extra stress now that she is improving.

UPDATE: 5PM: We have decided to keep her at the vet, she is still improving but we don’t want the car ride home to set her back.

        Fourth day:

UPDATE: 10AM Vet update: Luna is recovered well and will be ready to come home in the evening. She had her last pain meds and critical care over the night.

UPDATE: 8PM After some time to settle in at home, Luna has had a few poops and pees, she has had her evening pellets (although way slower than normal), eaten hay (slowly and not as much as normal), she isn’t very interested in veggies (although she’s nibbled). She is hopping around, running, laying, and nibbling on cardboard toys as she normally would before her GI stasis. My biggest concern is she hasn’t shown any interest in water, I tried to give her some in a dish, but she kept nudging it away. Her poops are drier and smaller than normal, but she has been eating less than she normally does during her recovery.

30 Days Later UPDATE: Luna is now completely back to herself and has made a full recovery.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Did the vet do any X-ray? X-rays are always recommended before force feeding and gut motility meds as a blockage can rupture the intestines. I would have the vet stop doing all force feedings and do an X-ray to make sure everything is clear. Are the doing sub q fluids too?

It sounds like Luna will get an x-ray in the morning. Unfortunately since it’s the weekend, the radiologist can’t review the x-ray in detail until Monday, although the current vet might be able to pick up on the basic things. We discussed the possibility of a blockage, but on palpation it didn’t feel like one, but hopefully in the morning we will know more. They weren’t too concerned about force feeding because they have not been very successful as she is not swallowing much of it anyway. I think they also plan on running liver/kidney function bloodwork in the morning. And yes, I’ll correct my original post, they did do sub-q fluids so she is rehydrated and peeing finally.
