Only rabbit people would have an entire thread about a single buns poo.  Anyways Lucys poos have always been a bit hairy then normal, but I let it slide because thats the way its been and she hasnt had problems.  She would occasionally have a two poo pearl string, but never more and only mabye once a week if that.  When she was younger she would leave cecals occasionally but it was rare so I didnt worry excessively like I do for most things.  They arent always consistant with size or shape but are mostly the same.  They smell awful, in case that matters, not stink up the room bad but they have a odor that Hammers does not.  I dont wanna get gross (already did that though lol) but its more like when you pick up one and toss it in the box its normally no biggie, but with hers you would be able to smell it on your fingers.  So I get something to sweep those up now.  She was just spayed maybe 6 weeeks ago and I think its better but shouldnt the smell be gone by now?  Anyways my new problem is today she had a FIVE poo pearl string!  She isnt shedding more then normal so I dont know why.  Now the grossness is over.  But I dont know what to do, normally I would increase water by soaking veggies, but she doesnt eat veggies.  Or encourage more hay, but hay is practically all she eats beside her 1/4 cup of pellets.  So Im completely lost.  Help?!

Do you think they have that coating on them that the territorial ones get? Jersey poops oddly too and now I have Rumball and seen how consistant he is, I worry about her output more so. Hers can have that old onion smell also – ick. I really don’t know why, I don’t think she digest hay as easily so her often come out odd shaped. They’re are darker & smaller too. Maybe due to high green intake? Maybe because her gut is slower processing? I generally think her gut doesn’t function at it optimum so perhaps this is just the case for some bunnies…

Anyway, as Lucy does eat hay alot, I guess she does keep her gut moving well, so all I can think is they have that mucous coating.  I think sometimes the cecal and fecal can be mixed.  Sorry, not much help.

That a lovely tribute to Rose you have there by the way.

I agree Jersey, I was so happy to see that sweet picture of our Rose! :o)

I’m thinking a mucous membrane too. Are they shiny? I also pick up any stray poos with my hand and I’ve picked up one that appeared “normal” and it was a bit gooey. I wonder if it’s possible they are a cross between regular poo and cecal?

I know Lucy is still young so you might not have a frame of reference yet, but Jersey you might know… have you noticed that Lucy or Rumball shed or have more pearl poops than Hammer or Jersey? Meadow is a rex, so I know it’s not fair to compare her to Max, but even with Stephen, my other uppy-eared “regular, non-rex” bun, Max sheds SO MUCH MORE. His fur is coarser and longer than Stephen’s was and I’m wondering if that might be a lop thing?

Well I don’t see it at all with Rumball. He is really consistant, though I haven’t had him go thru a major shed yet. With Jersey, it’s more often hay strung together poop! She doesn’t eat hordes of it and when she does, it comes out like this or sticking out of the odd poop like a cow lick. lol Bunnyliz, you really shouldn’t have started a thread on this topic!

Edit: I should add, Rumball has dense softer fur, where as Jersey has slightly longer & coarser hair, so maybe it’s has something to do with that?

I find that Fern sheds A LOT and she always has poo pearl strings and she is also a lop so maybe it is a lop thing.

One time she had a poo pearl string that was so long that (this is kind of gross) I could make a bracelet out of it. (not that I would want to.)

Ferns poos are always a little irregular, I didn’t realize this completely until I got Thistle, his poops are very regular.

I don’t know I just am saying not to be too worried about the poo pearl strings, if you see one it means that the hair is making its way out of the body and that is a GOOD thing.

lol! Yes well…maybe we shouldn’t refer to them as “string of pearl poops” eh?!

“Wow, that’s a lovely bracelet… where did you get it?!”

Now I want to see a pic of Moonlight with a string of poop wrapped around her wrist… LMAO!!!

Pearl poos are not unusual during shedding and lots of hay will make them pass. What does concern me is the regularity of the odd and smelly poos. I think if anything goes on for too long that’s different than the norm, it should be discussed with your vet. It may indicate a systemic condition that she handles, but if it’s something that should be treated, I hate to see it go on to get worse. I also think the lack of greens may be an indicator of a problem.

Since she’s been spayed fairly recently, I’d call the vet, or email her if you can and copy what you wrote to us here, and ask her if this is something to be concerned about and if she needs to be seen. She may want to have you bring in samples if there’s a possible problem.

Yea my siggy is nice huh?! Thanks

Anyways it could be a lop deal.  But Hammers fur is courser and Lucys is thinner and soft so no pattern there.  Hammer sheds much more too, his norm is to shed everyday!  He basically always has a shed pattern thing going on his back.  Starts as a small spot on his back and spreads out until its all the way off of him and starts over.  Lucy doesnt really shed much.  But yea Beka they have a slimy coat on them.  They arent wet or mushy, a normal poo with a coating.  Never thought about it being a territorial poo, could be because the only ones I pick up are out of the box.  Hey wasnt that a kids show?  Out of the box?  Anyways Ive never noticed if the ones in the box are gross or not, I have no need to deal with those, unless I want a new original braclet.   Hammer doesnt eat nearly as much hay and has awesome poos.  But like I said Lucys smelly poos have gotten better.  I can talk to my vet (no more vet drama!  Im waiting for my insurance waiting period and then no worries about their being so expensive.  There went the rest of my graduation money!).  But if you guys dont think Im a horrible bun mom, I think ill wait till VPI will pay.  If you think its something that cant wait, of course ill take her though.  It might get better soon, Lucy has eaten a few greens, but in tiny amounts and wont eat them consistantly.

Max gets some strings of pearls. I posted about it here and found out that its a good thing yay for bunny friends! penny’s poos are fairly consistent but Max gets some smelly ones sometimes- also darker in color. sometimes he even eats them after they’ve been on the ground- i think this confirms the half-cecal half-fecal probability.

and i have to ask, who is rose? its a lovely picture

Yea its at least good that she is passing them without a problem. But ive never seen her eat a poo that wasnt all cecal like Max.

Rose was my bunny I lost a few months ago. Thanks, she was very pretty.

i think it must have been cecal-like enough for him to eat
and i’m so sorry, liz. she’s binkying in bunny heaven, i’m 100% sure.

It’s been a few days now. Is she better? Any changes? If she seems to be OK and the poos are more normal, I’d say you’re ok to wait for the insurance to kick in.

I havent seen any poo strings pearls since this post, I havent noticed the smell as much either but it could be just because she hasnt left as many stray poos as before now that her and Hammer are on better terms. But today when I went to offer her a raisin while she was sitting in a litter box in the bonding pen, she had poos in her mouth (like katies max?). They looked like normal poos, I didnt notice until I offered the raisin but then she spit them out one by one before taking it. I was grossed out. Any ideas for that one? Lucy doesnt fit the mold for any normal bunny, im thinking I got a lean mean pooing machine crossed with a lop bunny instead of a pure bunny.
