        Hi!

I need to spay Wenet in a month. I’ve been looking around vets and I was considering the low cost clinic of a shelter. My concern is really not the price — I’m willing to pay more to get a safer service — but the fact that I don’t have a car and all other vets that handle rabbits are outside the city where I live. I asked some questions to this vet about the low cost service, but I feel like she was a bit too vague, she said she doesn’t have numbers but the success rate of spay/neutering rabbits in the clinic is “very high”. When I asked about the kind of anesthesia they used and why was the service low cost she replied saying that they use a combo of drugs, one that has a reversal if needed, and that they were a low cost clinic but I was welcome to call around other clinics that offer the same surgery. So it wasn’t clear to me A. what are they NOT doing like other regular clinics and B. What kind of anesthesia is that and how effective it is. Can anyone give me some advice on this? If this doesn’t sound very safe I can try to find an alternative with public transportation to get to the other clinics.

        Thank you!

How much exactly are they charging?

You may want to ask for the exact drug names if those are of concern to you and the Google around to see if they are ok? I found this link: https://rabbit.org/anesthesia-protocols-for-rabbits/. The link does talk about a combination of drugs used and one “antidote” drug, it also lists drug names which may be handy for you to refer to.

Maybe try and find reviews of other rabbit owners to find out if they are good with rabbits?

I don’t think low-cost spays are cheaper because they’re not doing things that regular clinics do, but because they operate like a charity rather than charging all the extra fees a regular vet would.

Did you actually speak to the vet, or was it a receptionist? It’s not unusual that the receptionist wouldn’t know the exact drug names and combinations.

The most important thing is that they see and operate on lots of rabbits, so if that’s the case, it’s probably okay.

Hi! Thank you all for the replies. Yes, I called again and I realized that I was talking to a receptionist. She said that the vets are very good and they see many rabbits. She also said that things can only go wrong if the bunny had an undiagnosed disease because they don’t do blood work there. As far as I know, they don’t do blood work before a spay anywhere, so I decided to schedule the appointment.
It will probably be fine, I’m just the usual hypochondriac

Oh, wow! I’m positively surprised that someone recognized the name! I’m an egyptologist 😀 and yes, that’s my lil Wenet when she was 8 weeks old. Your buns are so adorable as well!

Wow!!! That must be an awesome job!!!

I’m actually a pretty all-around history lover but Egypt was my first love. Been interested since I was a little kid. But still a big fan. My bedroom decor is all ancient Egyptian themed.

Thanks for the compliment about my buns. Sadly, the buns in my signature have all passed on. I now have a little (well, 9 lbs) girl named Elara.
