Lately, (past few weeks) Benjamin has been drinking a lot more water than usual.  Which of course has led to more peeing, a lot more peeing.  My question is… should I be concerned that Benjamin is drinking and peeing more?

When I say he is drinking more, he normally does not drink but about a 1/3 of his water bottle a day.  Now he is drinking 1/2 to 3/4 of his water bottle a day.  His vet has told me he needs to drink more water so I know the input is good, I just want to make sure that this increase is not a sign of something I should be worrid about.

        Sorry, I’m a crazy, worry-wart bunny mom.

You’re not a worry wart at all. It pays to notice these changes. My Doe is also doing this and I have the same concerns. Is Benjamin eating more hay that usual? Increased fibre in the diet will sometimes increase their water intake. I’m interested to know what others suggest.

He started eating more hay months ago when we changed brands. I would like he would have started drinking more earlier than this if hay was a factor. There has been no other changes with him and his diet.

Bunnycutie just posted about this https://www.binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/a…fault.aspx if it’s a big change, I think I’d go to the vet.

Thank you for sharing this thread. I will be sure to contact my vet and discuss this futher with her. I know Benjamin is not peeing quite as much as Buttons did, just more than his usual amount. I am still going to contact the vet as soon as possible. Thank you again Furface for the help.

Does his pee seem normal or more dilute? Does he have any trouble peeing?

I thought you might find this interesting. I’ve just been reading about a few cases where rabbits started drinking more as a way to sooth dental pain! So, as always, get those teeth checked out whilst at the vet. & ditto K&K, do let us know how the vet visit goes.

That’s very interesting Jersey…makes me wonder about my dental disaster Pepe who has started drinking more water…he does have a follow up with the dental vet on Tuesday so I’ll guess I’ll see what they say. Interesting about dental disease is that the symptons and behaviors can vary so greatly from rabbit to rabbit.

Yes, time and again it seems many issues come back to the teeth. It definately makes me want to get Jerseys molars checked. In these cases, it was a sore in the oral tissue caused by molar spurs that gave the pain.

I have called the vet and she has been booked but is going to call me monday to schedule an appointment for next week. Knowing Benjamin’s history she doesn’t seem too worried but said she will check his test and run a few tests. Benjamin has never really been much of a water drinker and we have been trying to get him to drink more. She seems to think he may have just finally realized he needs to drink more water and the increased water intake would cause more urination. Hopefully that is what is going on. Once I know more for sure I will be sure to post. Thanks for all the help and suggests. I will be sure to mention everything to her again at his appointment.

Jersey- His pee does look very normal and he shows no signs of having trouble peeing.  In the past he had some problems where he would pee everywhere and it was sludgy and gross.  This is normal pee, just a little more than he usually does.

I have two rabbits right now who are drinking/peeing more lately as well. I tend to notice a change in drinking/peeing depending on the type of hay. I recently switched from store bought (small, leafy pieces) to baled hay (longer, coarser strands) so I think this is the culprit in my case. Let us know what the vet says about Benjamin (who I think is extremely cute by the way )

Sometimes (okay, a lot) I feel like a worry-wart Mom too but it’s good to keep an eye on things. If you know your bunny really well, you will know when something is wrong and needs a vet.

We visited the vet and all seems well. His teeth look okay and they took some blood to check for other things. Best we can figure is he is just starting to drink more water, which with his digestive health history*, more water is a good thing. I am to keep an eye on him and if he starts acting strange or his eating habits change, I will take him back in. For now, everything is looking okay so fingers crossed it stays this way.

*Benjamin does not usually drink enough water so in the past we’ve had to syringe feed him additional water. Benjamin had sludgy pee in the spring and GI issues twice (the last time on the 4th of July). Each time we have been told to increase his water intake. Leaving us to syringe feed him water. So, that why we are all thinking that maybe his has finally realized he needs more water as is drinking it on his own (so hopefully we won’t have to chase him around with a syringe anymore).

Maybe he has finally realized that his over-compensating means that he doesn’t get that syringe poked in his mouth anymore! I’m glad to hear that everything sounded good at the vet.
