I’m trying to potty train Loppi better. About every other time he’s been peeing outside his litter box. I tried moving his hay so he has to stand in the litterbox to eat it. Do you think this setup will work, or should I try something else? I’m just wondering if it’s uncomfortable for him to have to stand up while eating

i think its a good idea. he could always pull the hay through the bars towards the bottom if it bothered him to stand up like that.

For some reason, my Buddie prefers to get the hay out of the top too. Maybe they better feel they can “dominate” the hay that way, stay on top of it so to speak lol. Buddie also likes when I toss a chewtoy in his litterbox. Do you have any chewtoys or other toys you can give to Loppi while he’s in there? The idea is to make them as comfortable in their litterbox as possible so they want to spend a lot of time there, and go back often, to “take care of business,” groom, rest, doze, etc. Loppi is a cutie!

Yes he does have some toys, but he doesn’t care for them at all. He doesn’t really like to play with toys or chew on anything except food really.

I just did the same thing for my two. I have the hay at the top of the litterbox though rather than along the side. That way they have to get all the way in the litterbox to eat the hay. It’s worked out really well for me this past week

I tried putting it on the end, by the wall. But he was starting to eat it from the side, not sitting in the litterbox – so I decided to move it to the next side of the cage

I also recommend having the hay only accessible from the litterbox. This works for my buns and for other member’s bunnies as well. My two can either sit and dig in, or they can lean on the edge of the hay basket to eat. I do like for them to be able to have unlimited access to the hay. I don’t like constricting hay balls because they can’t “dig right in”.

This may or may not work for you, but the most important thing is that the hay is being eaten. Messes might happen, accidents might happen, but you want them to always have access to hay.

i guess my buns are weird. when i was trying to litter train them, i had it so they had to get into the litter box to eat… and they kept going outside the litter box… then gradually even more outside the box… so i moved the box to the other side of the cage away from the food and now they use the litter box almost always and prefer to keep the two businesses separate. they’ll eat, then go take care of the other business, then come back to eat and so forth.
