Hi, my bunny, Bunnelby has a loose nail. It isn’t bleeding and she puts weight on the paw when she cleans herself and what not but folds it up to her chest when she’s just standing around. I’ve tried finding a good answer for this but all of the topics I find mention it’s bleeding and the rabbit seems to be in pain. Bunnelby is eating fine, chewing on her toys. Other than that paw bothering her it seems she’s fine.

But I need to know if I should try to clip it, rip it off, or leave it until I can get her to a vet to trim her nails. I will post pictures if needed!

Are you able to examine it? Sometimes the nail will crack and the outer “sheath” will come of, leaving a little nub. It generally doesn’t bleed when this happens, but it can still be sensitive since the nerves are right there. If you can see that it’s just a sheath hanging on by a thread, you can try to carefully remove it. I wouldn’t do it though unless it’s literally ready to fall off though. Otherwise, it might be better to leave it alone and have a vet take it off.

She is very finicky. ): She lets me touch the nail enough to feel that it’s loose but other than that she folds up her paws so I can’t get to them. It seems like the nail will fall off given how active she is and the way the nail looks and feels. Despite this problem she’s moving around really well. I decided that I’d wait overnight and check it tomorrow. But now I know to check if it’s fact her sheath coming off! My biggest worry is trying to “fix it” and damaging it worse somehow..

Thank you so much for your advice. <3

I’ve had this happen, if it’s a whole nail, let it come off naturally, mine have lost nails and turned out fine. Just watch if it grows back crooked or lumpy or misshapen.
