If anyone knows of a good quality, high fiber, timothy based pellet that does not contain Menadione or Exthoxyquin, please, please, please, let me know.
I need the high fiber due to poopy butts. Kaytee contains a preservative called Exthoxyquin. This is a cancer causing chemical so I won’t risk it. Oxbow contains Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Vitamin K). This chemical has recently been linked to many heath issues in dogs. Oxbow is what I’m currently using but I would really like to find one without either of those chemicals. I’m a lot picky after that whole China pet food thing so I try hard to stay as natural & chemical free as possible.
I just checked American Pet Diner and they contain the Menadlone too. It seems like Sweet Meadow Hay pellets do as well.

There’s the link to Zupreem – I don’t see those ingredients (although I could be missing it.

They don’t list a minimum Crude Fiber content, that makes me a little wary.
Corn being both the second & third ingredient is not a plus for me either. Corn is not very good for bunnies, high sugar content.
Edit to add: I just reread the Kaytee list & it actually contains both chemicals.
Those are the only pellets I know of. It might be a challenge for you to find the pellet you are looking for and you may have to compromise somewhere.

Here’s Purina High Fiber – it’s alfalfa based but I don’t see those ingredients unless I’m missing them. This is a good pellet as well.

Maybe try this one – it’s Oxbow’s organic and I don’t see those ingredients (at least I don’t think I do).
Wow, I can’t believe I’m going to consider switching to a Purina product. It’s ingredient look not to bad. Corn is in there but 5th on the list so that won’t be nearly as much as 2nd & 3rd. I would prefer timothy based & corn free but I may have to start making my own for all that to happen. It has the yogurt bacteria, I like that. I know what most of the chemicals are.
It’s definitely made the list of possibilities. Thanks. Any other suggestions are more than welcome too.

That one looks awesome. Thanks *inserts a dancing bunny smiley*
i think bunny basics T-it can be bought on line at the binky bunny store!
The Oxbow organic pellets are available thru the BinkyBunny store- one of the few places I have seen them for sale.
O_O so does this mean that Oxbow bunny basics T is dangerous to our bunnies?

…
No, these pellets are perfectly okay, please do not worry.
Ok thanks, that makes me feel better! ![]()
Furface: What pellet did you end up going with? I’m very curious, as I’ve been on the same mission (to find a pellet without those additives).

Karynne, if you don’t hear for Furface, try message her. She hasn’t posted on Binky Bunny very much of late – though she may be reading and see your question hopefully.
Thanks jerseygirl, will do!
Just to let everyone know, Oxbow Bunny Basics T appears to no longer contain Menadione! I looked at the ingredient label on the bag and it isn’t listed.
I just looked at one article in which the problems of this ingredient in pet foods is discussed. (http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=menadione)
What have you heard about it Karynne?
Do be aware of labelling laws. Sometimes if an ingredient is at a certain minimum it doesn’t actually have to be listed on the label. Well, at least in Australia this is so. If it’s under 5%. Oxbow are pretty good with customer relations. Might be worth shooting them an email to check this ingredient is completely removed now.
I’ve checked the labels of pet food always-and never seen it listed on Oxbow bunny basics…here’s the ingredients http://www.oxbowanimalhealth.com/products/type/fortified_food?node=1519
Ingredients
Timothy Grass Meal, Soybean Hulls, Wheat Middlings, Soybean Meal, Cane Molasses, Sodium Bentonite, Soybean Oil, Salt, Lignin Sulfonate, Limestone, Yeast Culture (dehydrated), Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Zinc Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Niacin, Copper Sulfate, Selenium Yeast, Vitamin A Supplement, Folic Acid, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Copper Proteinate, Riboflavin Supplement, Manganese Proteinate, Biotin, Manganous Oxide, Thiamine Mononitrate, Magnesium Sulfate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Cobalt Carbonate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Calcium Iodate
I don’t see it listed anywhere-neither is Ethoxyquin
Very awesome that everyone is reading pet food labels though!
I’m just really noticing a whole culture shift in almost all pet owners-and I really am thrilled. It seems like the pet food companies are responding too-although often things are mislabelled because by law they are allowed (all natural can be smacked on any ol’ pet food-according to the FDA) but I just feel I’m seeing more and more people question what goes in their pet food (dog, cat, rabbit etc) and companies responding by making better formulations ![]()
Oh also this is one I used to feed-as it’s readily available in Canada-and I don’t see Ethoxyquin or Menadione either.
http://www.martinmills.com/smallPetsRabbitTimothyAdult.asp
Timothy Meal, Soybean Hulls, Wheat Middlings, Soybeans, Barley, Soya Oil (preserved with Rosemary Extract, Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Wheat Germ, Brewers Yeast, Dicalcium Phosphate, Lignin Sulfonate , Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Rice Hulls, DL-Methionine, Mannan OligoSaccharide, Ascorbic Acid (a source of Vitamin C), Choline Chloride, Iron Sulphate, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Vitamin E, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Niacin, Mineral Oil, Copper Sulphate, Folic Acid, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12, Vitamin A, Biotin, Selenium, Vitamin K, Riboflavin, Vitamin D3, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Calcium Iodate, Cobalt Sulphate.
Could the listing of Vitamin K in those pellets be menadione though? Menadione is vit K3, a synthetic form of vit K, so I’ve just learnt.
Also, for those looking out for Ethoxyquin in their foods or pets foods, it can be labelled as E324.
