Looking for Advice/Thoughts on a Few Minor Issues

So, in my bunny’s litter box I use pee pads to line the box to make for easier clean up. Recently I switched to a hay rack rather than putting her hay directly in the box since it seemed wasteful as she was standing on it and peeing on it. But since I started using the hay rack, shes started digging at the pee pad to get to the hay that has fallen out of the rack and it just makes a whole nother kind of mess. I’ve even tried taping the edges of the pee pad down, but it didn’t help. I’ve seen the litter box liner tray thing they sell on here.. has anyone else used it? Do you think that would make a difference? I guess basically I’m looking for other suggestions or ideas for a better litter box/hay feeder system. 

Another issue I’m experiencing in the past few days is that shes been pooping on the couch a lot. More poop than pee, which i guess is better than vice versa. My bunny is free roaming so either when I’m gone at work, or over night, or even sometimes when I walk away for a few minutes into the other room, I come back it’s just covered in little poops. I’m not sure if this is her way of saying “Hey, clean out my litter box because I’ve made a mess of it” (coming back to the first problem) or if this is a territorial thing.. I’m also wondering if it;s more territorial, if it will get better once I get her spayed in a few months when she;s old enough. 

What do you guys think???

I’ve always had my boys’ hay right in their litter box because they eat it loads more than when it was in a feeder or rack. They’re pretty good about digging through it for the non-peed on pieces. So it might just be best to go back to the old set up.

For pooping, yes it’s territorial and will get much better when she’s spayed. She might even start spraying soon, so beware

I do the same — I have two litter boxes side by side and put the hay on the ridge in the middle — but a lot of it just ends up in the boxes. The bunnies do pee around it.

I’ve never tried pee pads but would be concerned if the bunny might chew on them. What you could use them with, if you really prefer them to litter like CareFresh is the kind of double litter box that has a plastic screen bottom over a regular box. You put the litter (or pee pads) in the bottom box and then the box with the screen bottom over it. I got mine from rabbitlitterbox.com but that site is apparently no longer up, and i can’t find it elsewhere — but maybe there are others like it.

Sounds territorial to me too!

I switched from a hay rack to putting Kurotta’s hay right on the litter box as well because he simply ate much, much more that way. His litter box has a grate on top though, so he can’t get to the litter. The hay sits on top of the grate and whatever that’s too small will just fall through right into the box. If you could DIY or buy a screen for your box then your bunny wouldn’t be able to dig and pee will just go right through the screen
