Basil is winning the battle of the sore hocks! they are almost completly fuzzed over! yay! lol Because of his lil footsies I have been making him a soft squishy bed to stretch out on and I finished it today!!! I hand stitched the bright blue “B” on the corner of it to make it more original and plus it looks adorable! lol

  Here Basil is trying it out and he seems to really like it! Im just hoping he dosent pee on it! lol

 

 

Also I was at our tractor supply store and found this!!!!

A cool treat ball that was intended for chickens

(dont ask me why its for chickens! I have no clue! I have chikens and they would never touch this thing! lol)

but I use it for Basils hay rack and he LOVES it! and the awesome thing is that is was $4!!!!! lol  It works great for a single bun but its a bit small so it probably would be gobbled down to fast if it was with more than one bun! lol

 

Here is Basil all stretched out I just thought this was too cute to leave out!

where he is laying right now is where he always stretches out so I put his new bed there I hope he will use it!

Awwww. Basil reminds me very much of my Spockie. He stretched out like that, was a mini rex with sensitive hocks, and had similar markings.
Love your handiwork on the blankie.

Thank you! that B took FOREVER! lol but it was worth it! Basil seems to really like his new bed BUT he are having some warm days and its been kinda hot so he stretches out and pushes the bed up and lays his head on the bed and has the rest of his body on the cool tile haha he is a mess Im sure he will love it when it starts cooling down again

I hate to say it, but watch the B. Since it’s raised up, he might try to nibble on it, and if he starts pulling the threads out, it will have to be removed for his safety. Another idea to save the B would be to remove the cover, cut out the square with the B, frame it and hang it on the outside of the pen. Then sew a plain cover for the bed. Your crafty work would be displayed but it would not post a risk to Basil.

I’ve seen people use those hay balls before. You should still have hay elsewhere (unrestricted) because some buns will limit their hay intake if they have to “work” for it. Just something to watch for…

The bed looks great and I’m sure when he wants warmth, Basil will lie down on it for some good r & r, any day now, if you go by the cool patches we’ve been having here. If he’s resting his head on it while enjoying the cool tile everywhere else, that already tells you it’s a success! When my bunnies push bedding aside, they push the whole thing aside and don’t even rest their weary wittle heads on it! I wish they would. You are a handy embroiderer too! I have to concur with what Beka pointed out though, my buns would bite at and pick at the raised surfaces on bedding I got them, too. But do display your talent prominently near Basil for all to see and admire!

 how do you tell if a rabbit has sore hocks? are there marks you can actually see? i have a rex and i know their feet are more sensitive than others so i want to make sure he doesn’t get sore hocks!

There’s a few thing you can do to help reduce the risk of your rabbit developing sore hocks. Keep his nails trimmed so weight is distributed evenly over their foot. Keep them off wire flooring and provide soft, non abrasive bedding. Rexes can be prone to easy weight gain too and sore hocks can result, so keeping their diet in check is wise.

You may notice some bald patches on your rexes hocks. If they are light pink and calloused, then this is ok. It’s when they become inflamed, or scabbed that they need attention.
