Lolli’s butt

 Lolli must be losing some weight cause I’ve seen her get into the butt-cleaning position and clean the insides of her back legs at least.  But I’ve been bad with what I’ve been feeding her.  I’ve given her some saltine crackers.  I know I know.  She doesn’t get any now.  She seems to be having very slight poopy butt.  When I examine her and try to clean her up, it’s not bad at all.  But I’ve noticed her skin looks a bit red. It looks more irritated than anything.  Besides neosporin, is there anything else I can put on her to soothe the area?   

She has been eating her dreaded oxbow pellets.  It seems like it’s a very grudgingly thing though.  LOL  I don’t have to worry about her eating all her pellets cause she hasn’t done that.  I actually recycle them – I dump the uneaten pellets back into the pellet contain and give her fresh. There’s quite a bit left so I really do not want to just throw them away.

Why would you give her saltine crackers?

Cause I was eating them and she literally tried to climb up me to get to the cracker I was holding. So bad mommy that I am gave in. Hangs head in shame. I’m surprised she doesn’t have worse poopy butt than she does. And I only gave her bits. I’d break off a bitty piece and give it to her and eat the rest of the cracker.

I think she needs a sanitary shave. Not that she’s bad, but she’s shedding and I think that’s a big part of it. It seems to be a mix of shedding fur and a bit of poop. But the way she sheds, the fur comes out in tufts. And they just stay there until I pluck her or brush her. Whenever I’ve looked at her underside, the shedding didn’t seem that bad.

That sounds like my rabbit Toffee – she’s a big girl. I will clean her butt and pick tons of clumped fur off around her back end. I think that is part of the problem with poop sticking to the butt. I’m not her friend when I have to do that.

Calendula cream is soothing to a rabbit’s skin. It can be found in natural foods stores.

I need to sterilize the clippers and scissors and take her to the bathroom and do some serious grooming. I went and helped clean up a lady’s rescue bunny. He looked like he was sick, so I definitely don’t want to pass anything along to Lolli. Lolli’s not gonna be happy. It’s so funny cause they get so grumpy but you can tell they always feel better afterwards. lol

I bought round-tipped grooming shears to cut out the clumps of poop when she was really bad. I figure I’d just trim her fur down a bit.

If her skin is red- it might help to figure out why it is- and then what would help it.  If it is red from moisture being held against it- something drying or even nothing at all could help.  If it is red from being scalded by urine then something soothing and protective would help.  Let us know why you think it might be red and we can offer what we think will be most beneficial.

I *think* it might be red from urine scald. I really don’t know though. I check her as soon as I smell any poopy butt and clean her up. I looked and trimmed some of her fur off. She was difficult. Imagine that. lol But aside from a little poop stuck in her fur, she is not bad at all. And the redness is in front of her….genitals. If you put her on her back with her feet resting on your stomach, the redness is above her genitals. I put some neosporin on her.

Normally when I lay down on the floor she comes up for some pets. She did once. But then she kept coming up to me, I’d try to give her nose pets and she’d turn around and give me her butt. She’s a big flirt and tease. And obviously NOT happy that I messed with her. She’s also going nuts cause I’m not sharing my peanut butter with her. LOL

True confessions time: I used to give Spockie saltine cracker pieces as a treat. He loved them. It was long before I ever found Binkybunny, and ignorance is bliss. He only got a few bouts of poopy butt in his entire 8 years, it didn’t make him obese, and he loved them. I won’t let Samantha try them now because I know it’s not good for her, but no vet ever bothered to tell me not to, and he seemed to not come to any real harm – no GI stasis, etc. So switch to another treat, but don’t sweat the saltines of the past. I switched to treats like veggie smacks which are ground up healthy food into treat shapes and it smells icky to me but she loves them, so go figure.

The only thing I can figure out about the saltines is that they’re…well salty. Cause as you know, they’re pretty bland. So other than the saltiness, I can’t figure out why else she practically climbs up me to get to them. I can get acid reflux sometimes so I eat saltines occasionally to try to calm my stomach. So they aren’t an all the time treat or anything. She likes other crackers (which she doesn’t get now) but she doesn’t go nuts over them. Just the saltines. LOL

Well I am going to make my own treats. Grind up some healthy oxbow pellets, add some ground up oats, a little pureed carrots, some water and a bit of honey. The honey alone will make her want them as she has a sweet tooth. I might not add in the carrots.

Except for the pellets, that sounds like a good acid reflux reducer. Ask her to share them with you.

I just watched Lolli clean herself. She decided to come out of her box and do a full body bath while I was laying on the floor. I never paid attention before but I assume she hasn’t been able to clean herself for a while now. And now she’s apparently lost weight and can reach now. I haven’t seen her bend this much or get into the butt cleaning position in a long time. But I was wondering if it’s possible she’s red from over-grooming herself?

This is really random, but I found bunny shaped saltines the other day. It totally made my day. And yes, I paid the ridiculous amount of money to buy them.
Yeah for Lolli’s weight loss! And I hope her butt feels better soon!

I would doubt she is red in that area from overgrooming.

Ok. I’m just confused about what’s causing her to be red. Cause her poopy butt was not bad at all. And she’s red in an area where the poopy butt didn’t touch. But I’ll quit worrying about the cause and concentrate on getting it healed up. I did trim her fur a bit so hopefully that will help if it’s urine scald.

Kate Monster – I know!! She hasn’t lost a lot of weight, but I’m glad she’s able to care for herself better.

Urine scald is an indication of a bladder or urinary infection. It is most likely red from any moisture from poopy butt or washing that area and it not getting completely dry. I would just let it heal on it’s own without any intervention.

Ok. I will quit worrying and poking at her. I have some nice bite marks. LOL I haven’t washed her in quite a while so it’s probably from the poopy butt. She’s been peeing just fine. And she’s grudgingly eating her oxbow pellets. lol
