Lola shreds fabric, substitutes for blankies?

My lovely mini-rex, Lola, is making it hard for me to find something to put in her and Daisy’s condo for them to bed down. Everyone else, including the piggies have nice thick blankets and cozies I’ve made them from flannel, fleece and sheepskin. They love them.

I spent all morning sewing one for Lola and the first thing she did was jump in it and and start chewing and spitting out chunks so I got it out.

Do you guys have any ideas of what else I might use to give them something warmer than their linoelium condo floor? I’ve tried bathtowels, quilted pieces, sheepskin, fleece, flannel, even filling 2 rooms of their maze with hay (but she just digs it out). They do lay on them when they’re in the condo, it’s just that Lola does a number and I’m afraid that she’s not spiiting all the pieces out.

Here’s a pic of the towel I’ve talked about her savaging like a mad dog. She did this in about 15 minutes of jumping into my lap to avenge the brushing and nail cutting I put her through.

Any suggestions?

Hmm, Chloe sometimes dose the same thing but it takes her alot longer to actuly bite threw the towel. She only dose it once in awile though, im not sure why though.

That was quick work! What about bedding straw? Or would that be really messy and peed on? You could put it in a burlap bag perhaps.

How about cardboard? It’s a little softer and warmer than lino.

that’s an idea, I make go get some larger boxes and cover their whole floor.

I really don’t see anything wrong with just the linloeum. You could also get some coroplast for the bottom, which is sold by sign making stores, or online.
But they don’t require a bedding to sleep on and both my bunnies pushed away bedding in favor of a smooth floor for the night.

Mimzy prefers the plastic floor of his habitat, but today I put in one of those thick edible straw mats (you find them at PETCO-I got a large sized one that goes all the way across the pen) and even though he’s digging away at it and gnawing, it’s okay for him to do so and right now he’s tuckered out from all the activity and resting on it quite comfortably.
I’m thinking if he does well with a few of these, I may try to reintroduce softer bedding at a later date. I just think it would be more comfortable for him than static filled plastic. Maybe he’s getting the idea it would too!

Bahahah that’s what our towels look like-they’ve all at one time or another been near a rabbit. I have one I keep to take to the gym that the buns can’t use so I don’t look like I have moths when I’m in the shower :p

You can use grass matts-untreated sea grass. Another thing-since we all already have houses that look like barns and hay bales in our closets…why not try straw? It’s soft, warm, cheap and throw out able-and chewable. They would likely pee in it-but they pee on towels generally as well.

You might want to check out the Bunny Bed at http://www.thebunnybasics.com That’s the bed my Buddie loves to nestle in and he doesn’t chew or bite it. Before that, I went through various beds that he gnawed at and chewed. Also, he doesn’t chew but loves to nestle on his SuperPet Hide’n’Sleep bed – that looks like a human’s bed! pictured in my Profile picture. He has a lot of affection for both of those. The SuperPet Lay’n’Lounge chair I’ve heard – made of the same nontoxic materials as the Hide’n’Sleep, is great also.

Have you tried cotton rugs? She will still chew them (my mini rex destroys them) but the cotton shouldn’t be too dangerous if she swallows a bit. I try to find them at thrift shops and sometimes you can find them cheap at Target or Walmart. I gave up long ago trying to make anything look pretty if it comes near that bun

I did get some of those heavy cotton rugs when Linens and Things went out of business last year, alicat. She did do a number on theirs, but it looked like she just tried to shred that and not eat it at least so I try to keep it trimmed. I guess it will just disappear sooner or later as she and I keep cutting on it.

During the last week, I’ve sewed half a dozen different blankets and pads and tried them all in Lola’s condo with the same results. Then I came home with a remnant of old timey flags fleece and she likes it! Maybe she just thought the others were ugly…lol Whatever it is I’m going back to see if they have anymore.

I tried to get a photo of her and Daisy snuggled on it but she kept jumping up and running over to me. You can see the other fleece I have around the back of the condo. At night I pull it around the condo like a curtain to cut down on cold drafts and they seem to be snug as 2 bugs now.

Until she develops a taste for flags I guess.
