I know a friend that cuts hay every year and I was debating on asking him if I could buy some/ have some to try for the buns.  What kind of questions do i ask him.  As when I did ask if it was Timothy Hay he didn’t know what I was talking about really.  I guess they make there hay more for cows than rabbits.

Make sure you buy horse hay for your bunnies. Cow hay, or silage, is crappy hay and will probably make the buns sick.
Anyway, try to get horse hay from them , not silage or cow hay.
Otherwise, that’s what I feed mine and it saves SOOOO much money…!

Try to get some photos of the hay, and compare it to photos online to see what kind of hay it is. If it is alfalfa hay, it will be too fattening for the bunnies, but if it is timothy or oat hay, that would be good for your bunnies. Try getting photos of the seed heads in particular because that will help you determine what the hay is.

Also – where is the hay grown? I work a bit in the “boondocks” and a lot of people have horses, and they said they never buy certain types of hay that are grown south of Nebraska because they have blister beetles in some hay types south of Nebraska – so you may want to ask him if he has ever had an issue with blister beetles because these are posionous to bunnies (someone plz. correct me if thats wrong, but thats the information I got from some of the horse owners out here)

You’ll save tonnes of money-we pay way too much for hay in the petstore

              The advice above=fantastic

Definitely worry about spraying/hericides-if it’s natural then great!! And you’ll probably pay 5$ for about 200$ dollars worth of store hay -nice huh?!?!?

honestly, i am too nervous to purchase hay that was grown locally. You don’t know if there are bugs in it, if it has been sprayed with pesticides, or molded. You’re better off sticking with KayTee if you ask me.

I think it is all about personal preference and your comfort and trust that the hay is safe and I am glad you are asking!  I agree, cow hay is nasty stuff!  If you really think about it, pesticides are really not used on the hay but it MAY drift over from another farm spraying their crops.  I am confident the hay my local HRS buys is safe as well as a few local feed stores and Binky Bunny too.
You want organic, no pesticide and very clean (not dusty), not moldy hay (mold is toxic to rabbits) and the greener the better and if it smells sweet, then you have a good hay.

Here is some more info on choosing hay:

That’s all great advice ladies! I will definetly consider it  before I buy/feed any local grown hay to my buns.
