        Hey everyone,

I just got off the phone with Loki’s vet and she is worried that he may have a parasite, his bloodwork was unusual with a high liver count but everything else was normal.  I keep reading about pine shavings being a possible issue for liver issues and I know that where I adopted him from used pin shavings with her rabbits. Said they have been doing it for years with no issues, but that she did not take her rabbits to the vets.

anyone give me some advice, they talked about a fecal flotation exam, they talked about medication therapy something called baycox?

        Or an ultrasound.

        Loki and Sarah

A fecal float is a good test to see if he has intestinal parasites. Ultrasounds can also be very informative.

Pine shavings can cause some issues long term, but pine pellets are safe because the aromatic compounds are removed in the pelleting process. And it is something that might never cause issues unless the rabbit has to go under anesthesia. How many years was he on shavings vs. with you?

I’m not sure about the medication, but hopefully someone else will chime in.

Baycox is a medicine against coccidiosis. Coccidia are microscopic parasites that can infest the liver of a rabbit. Here is some info about coccidiosis:

Baycox yes that is the medicine the vet had mentioned. So I was able to get my passed dog vet in town to do a FFloataion exam. So as soon as my little dude Loki wakes up, I can scoop and drive 5min away. They will send the results to my new vet for Loki and go from there.  Phew, did not have to drive 2 hours with a scoop full of poop under a lockdown.

Thanks for the link Bam I guess he has had it more than three months since he is 9m and got him when 5M.  We had him neutered in March and he got a blood test then, and then again a month later and then again without the liver results going down so hope if that is the case and he has Coccidia at least we will know and can do something for him.

I’m glad you’ll get to do the fecal float locally! So much less hassle!

I thought I would update you on Loki, he had his fecal float and came back negative so we are back to the beginning.
