Little Whistles (sneezing)

 I think my rescue (not Kya, the other one) has some sort of sneezing issue. I’m planning her spay and I thought I should have it looked at as well. Her eyes and nose are clear and the little whistles aren’t constant. They happen when she’s agitated (i.e excited or upset). I was just hoping for some more information on what her condition is and how easy it is to treat. Basically, I’m looking for a, she just needs some of this drug and she’ll be okay. I really hope it’s nothing serious

My rabbit was just actually doing the same thing, wheezing and sneezing. Her eyes and nose were clear, and then about 3 weeks later of me switching litter, cleaning the dust in my room (thinking it might be allergies) I saw snot come out. So I took her to the vet on Sunday and as soon as he used this stethoscope on her and could hear the issues in her lungs. Since I waited so long on taking her to the vet, we did xrays on her to make sure she did not have abscesses in her lungs. He also recommended a culture but thought that putting her on baytril for now will be enough to clear it up. So she has the classic “snuffles” URI. My advice to you would go get her into the vet ASAP so you won’t have to pay 200$ + for xrays or 200$+ for a culture. Pasturella is horrible and VERY contagious so please separate her from your other rabbits since it can be transmitted in the air from sneezing. Also if it is a infection you might have to try different antibiotics because some won’t work so no one here but your vet can tell you any meds to use

So I recommend getting her to a vet asap and quarantine her now. Your vet will have to instruct you from there. {{{vibes}}}

Definitely keep her away from other animals right now, and get her to a vet BEFORE her spay appointment. The sooner the better. Good vets won’t spay when there is a health issue, so get it taken care of first.

I know this is an old thread but I’m still not satisfied. I took her to a vet to get her a spay appointment and a basic check up. I didn’t mention anything specifically about the little noises because I was a little distracted but the vet though she was healthy and checked out fine. To more effectively describe the noises she makes: It sounds a lot like the sounds a pug dog makes. Like a whistle snort. I’ve heard of lops making these sounds because of their smooshed faces but my girl doesn’t really have a strange shaped face?? It also only seems to happen when she’s in her cage. Do you think she’s having an allergic reaction to her shaving. MY other bun is litter trained and lives in a pen and never makes these noises.

I haven’t really heard of any lops making that sort of noise. Rabbits have a tendancy to hide their illnesses and could even get worse over a course of time.

What kind of bed/litter shavings are you using in her cage?

It’s such a simple fix to change out bedding to test whether that’s the cause that I would just go ahead and do that. I love Aspen pellets for litter, but Feline Pine is an excellent pellet, is cheap (you can get the cat kind) and can be found in small bags in grocery stores as well as pet stores. I’d just try it and see if there’s a change for the better.
Either your problem will be solved, or you need to call the vet to alert her before the procedure in case it is a different problem causing it that might put her at risk during the surgery.

I just use an all natural, unscented, aspen shaving. I’ll try those things, thanks.

I have a Dutch rabbit who makes alot of noises all the time. He snores and makes a wheezy type sound when he’s resting. He’s always been this way – he’s 8 years old now. He’s been to the vet’s plenty of times and he has no discharge or sneezing. I’m not sure how helpful this is to you. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to try other litters. I do think that if you have further concerns you should talk to the vet about it.

Wait, is she honking? I listened to a couple youtube videos and it sounds kind of similar… And like I said it definitely happens when she’s excited.
Update: I did change her bedding to carefresh but it doesn’t seem to have stopped or altered the sound. Her spay appointment is in two days and I talked to my vet about these new sounds. The vet wants me to keep in touch and will be doing a full exam of her before the surgery to make sure there is nothing wrong. Hopefully she’s just vocalizing because I really don’t want to reschedule
Maybe I’ll upload I video of my own and you guys could help me identify? I’m just trying to figure this out so I can prepare for what kind of a day I’m going to have Monday.

Does it sound like ‘mm, mm?’ That is what honking is. Unspayed rabbits will do itt… some spayed or neutered ones do as well. Mine honks and circles my feet despite her being spayed.

Tomorrow is the big day, so I’m glad the vet is alerted, but I’m also hoping it turns out to be honking. If you get a video up we can tell better, but don’t worry yourself about doing that. Tomorrow the vet will be able to tell if it’s a concern.

Okay I just got home from dropping her off at the clinic. The vet seems to think she checks out fine so I’m glad. I felt really bad leaving her there though, I miss her already and I hope she goes through surgery alright

I am going to say it might be honking too…my little Blu-man likes to grunt even though he’s been neutered for several months now. He still circles me too..haha His grunt sounds dog-like, so maybe it’s the same thing… My other bun makes whistling noises on occasion, but it was more in a relaxed state, so we’re going to say she was snoring.. haha And both are lops. Hope all goes well with the spay.
