I must be a litterbox failure. I would be thrilled if my buns would stop peeing (really more piddling, since it’s just a little bit) on the rug. Here’s their living situation:
Big cage with mesh floor and resting areas. They get “turnout” into the roon 4 hours a day.
I have 4 boxes with hay in them out in the room.
Both Lily and Big are spay/neutered.
Most pooping and peeing occurs in the boxes, but there are always some poops and worse yet pees on the rug everyday!
One BIG question: I had buns before (only semi-successfully trained) and when they got old they peed on the rug a lot. It’s stained and gross, but I am hesitant to replace it just so Big and Lily can do the same. Or is the residual smell making them mark?
Many friends I gave the rescue sibling away to report perfect box behavior! But they only have one bun and they have hardwood floors. Should I get hardwood floors (this may certainly happen anyway since I don’t want another ruined rug)? Or is it because they only have one bun?
In the first month or so I spent innumerable hours trying to watch them and make sure they went in the box, but there were many of them and this was difficult. Do I really need to spend 4 hours a day watching them like hawks? I’d feel bad not letting them out for so long, but I can’t realistically watch them that long either. Ideas?
