We have had our lionhead bunny for 1 week and are full of questions.  My husband and I have never had rabbits but when we saw our little Buster, our hearts melted!  The fact that we were told that rabbits could be litter trained is what won us over, however we are finding it very difficult.  We have been putting his poo and urine in the litterbox, but that has not swayed him.  In fact, he likes to lounge in the litterbox and sleep!  He’s really pooping everywhere and were going to try one of your other tips of putting more litterboxes in and using your preferred litter.  Do you have any other suggestions on keeping him from making his litterbox his bed?

          Hi there

well, lounging in the litter box is completely normal for a rabbit. Some will nap in there, and he sounds pretty happy if he is laying in his box. Also, adding some hay to the box helps as well.

an 8 week old will not take to litter training right away. he is after all, a baby still

Does he go in a certain corner in the cage?

Also, neutering him at 4 months old will help his litter habits. I would find a good exotic vet in your area to make sure he is in tip top health and schedule a neuter appt

As LCC mentioned, he’ll get much better with age and neutering. In the meantime, keep an eye out for where he likes to “go” and where he likes to sleep. Put litterboxes where he likes to go and a towel where he likes to sleep = D

Sometimes rabbits will choose their preferred place to pee without any regard to what’s already there lol. Sometimes all you have to do is put a litterbox in that place and they’ll just keep going there, even if they have to hop up into a box to do so.

              All good suggestions!

Do you have litter or bedding down in the rest of the cage? This could be confusing him, as it’s like giving him 10 different toilets and expecting him to know which one is the right one. Leave the floor bare and he’ll be less likely to pee there (a bare floor doesn’t absorb urine and he’ll know that).
