I put fresh hay just about ev. day on top of old hay in litterbox.  Do most of you just keep putting fresh hay on top or do you take out  some of the old hay out before putting fresh.  This is in between total litterbox cleaning.

I’ve heard before – freshen up the hay. Put the old back into the bag, shake it around, take out the hay and put it back

Or, you can do it like food, the old hay on top, the new on bottom. Or mix it within one another.

I pop mine on top then stick my finger in to shake it about. I make sure I chuck it all out once a week though.

I only put fresh hay in the hay racks, then sweep up hay that’s been dumped on the floor and put it in the litter box. Usually there’s not much hay left in the litter boxes themselves – it’s all been eaten or trampled into the litter, so I just dump more on top. The bunnies always seem to eat the hay in the litter box as first priority, then go for the hay racks (which hang in reach of the litter boxes)

Discarding of the hay left in the litterbox after they already had a go at it helps keep odors to a minimum. Basically, once the hay has been peed on, it should be tossed.

Interesting to read this – I don’t usually top up hay (and wondered if I should) as I currently throw it all out with the litter every other day, so topping up tends to get mostly wasted. (Unless the box is still very full with hay, in which case I reuse some of it towards the bottom of the litterbox.) There tends to be droppings mixed in with everything so it’s a bit difficult to separate out the “clean” hay. We go through a whole bag of hay between two bunnies every two weeks!
