Litter training ?

Hello everyone,

My husband and I just got 2 eight-week-old male Holland Lops. They are as sweet and gentle as can be. We are trying to litter train them even though they’re young, we were hoping it would get them into the habit of doing their business in the litter box before they are neutered. In the last 5 days we’ve had them, they have improved quite a bit. They still leave their pills around the play pen but not quite as much. However; we notice they pee in the same area as their water bowl. A few times when I notice they are ready to pee, I would pick them up and place them in the litter box. When we are not home, they would go to their usual spot which is next to the water bowl. Their food bowl is placed inside their litter box along with some hay so I think that helps. Aside from tearing the piece of newspaper which they peed on and placing it inside the litter box, which we are already doing, how do we get them to pee in the litter box and not next to the water bowl? Do you have newspaper everywhere in the pen? Have you tried not laying down paper and having them on the bare floor?

I do have newspaper laid on the floor of the playpen. I will try it on the bare floor.

Many bunnies will pee on anything absorbent (especially at first) so the newspaper is likely causing them to pee outside the litter box. I agree with removing that and then see how they do.

Thank you for your advice! I got rid of the newspaper and it seems to help a lot. The smaller bunny still has accidents outside the litter box but it’s not as bad as before. They still poo outside the litter box though. Is that something I have to wait until they’re older or neutered to get better? I thought they go potty in one place but their droppings are everywhere. We always have to sweep them up and drop them in the litter box, but they’re not getting the hint.

They will likely continue to drop poops until they are neutered, then you will see a rapid improvement. They always drop a little, even after surgery, but before surgery they can’t help it. Don’t drive yourself too crazy. It will get all better once they are neutered.
