I just recently adopted a female bunny. We were told that she was 5 months old and unspayed. We were also told she never pees anywhere but her litterbox. Its been a few days and shes adjusting well except a few times she peed outside her littler box. I was just wanting some tips on how to get her to start only using her littler box again. Shes my first bunny, so all tips are welcome!

She is being territorial most likely due to the fact that she’s in a new environment and she’s unspayed. 5 months is a very hormonal age. Are you planning on having her spayed? This usually helps with the litter habits but more importantly is the health risk of leaving her unspayed. Female buns that are unspayed have a very high risk of reproductive cancers.

Is she free-roam or living in a cage/pen?

Some things you can do,is let her pick where she wants her litter box. If there’s a spot she seems to like, put the box there. You can also try adding a second box. And make sure the box is a spot where she wants to spend time. Make sure the box is big enough for her to lay down in and you put hay in it. Bunnies love to eat and “go” at the same time.

I am planning on having her spayed as soon as I find a good vet in my area.

She has a cage for when I’m not home, but when I’m around she is able to roam my bedroom. what do you suggest for the littler in the litter box?

I agree that she’s likely hormonal, and also that marking a new place is common. So with those combined, it’s not surprising that she’s marking a little. It should decrease with time and with her spay.

Make sure that there isn’t anything absorbent in the cage that would make her want to pee there. No bedding of any kind for now.

For litter, I’m a big fan of Yesterday’s News or wood stove pellets.
