        Im having litter issues.

I am training Moreland on his litter habits were good inside his x pen and cage and his bedroom he uses the box. As soon as hes out in the living room he pees in the corner. Always even if the box is out in the living room. Am I allowing him too much space to roam too soon? How do I do this so that I can slowly introduce him to new places? Also how do I get him to always poop in the litter box. He was neutered Saturday? Is it all too soon?

        HHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have read all the other posts about litter training and its not working?

you have to limit his run space until he is very consistent. if he’s peeing in the corner of the living room, do you have a litterbox you can put there? does hay in the box work for him?

If he pees in one corner that’s perfect, put a litter box there and ‘voila!” trained

its an area not really just one spot i had a litter box there and he peed next to it!

i gues si just give him too much space at once! i feel bad not being with him 24/7 lol.

I would put another litter box in the corner where he pees. What are you cleaning up the urine stains with? Is it carpet? If it is not cleaned up well enough and a smell is still there, they will pee there.

                  You can do two things:

Train him to only go his room by watching him carefully in the living room and as soon as he lifts his tail scoot him to his litterbox or pick him up and put him in his litterbox in his room.

                  OR

Use the litterbox in the living room, and do the same thing – watch him carefully and put him in the litterbox in the living room (say litterbox each time you do this – mine now know the word litterbox because of this) Also, does he ever go in the litterbox? If not, then take some urine soaked litter from his other box and put in the litterbox in the living room. Also, add a healthy treat to his box. Along with hay, maybe his favorite greens, or a small piece of fruit.

i am using vinegar however my dog when he was a puppy had the same thing in that area. when we save a little money were pulling up the carpet and installing wood floor. it will be much easier for the bun and the other pets. i have steam cleaned that area several times however its not all coming out no matter what. i have limited his space to run. i will try his favorite greens etc in the box to see if that helps. i have only had him about a month. im not sure how long it takes buns to warm up but we are still working on that. i appreciate all the advice. any advice on getting animal smell out of the carpet completely? or do i just have to rip it up? i have tried enzyme cleaner etc it doesn’t work. i have steam cleaned the same areas several times and its still not coming up? Suggestions?

It is really difficult when urine has been soaked into the underneath bedding. Many times other pet urine “oops” will lead to remarking. The only thing I know of is to train him NOT to go there by watching him like a hawk and as soon as he lifts his tail, off the the litterbox he goes. This is not easy and it’s really a pain, but it really is the only way I know of to break a bad habit. Some bunnies get it right away, within a few days, while others may take a month.

Regarding him warming up…what does he do now? How does he react – is he skittish or aggressive or just aloof?

he is somewhat warming up i know it will take a little more time. he will not for the life of him let me pick him up or wrap him in a bunnyrito so im not sure how i will pick him up and carry him to his box. yesterday he came bolting out of his room and we chased him around the house trying to get a pen set up for him so he could be out. was jumping up and down on the couch with no accidents. i blocked off the area he was going in and we didn’t have a problem. he goes through his days where he doesn’t want to be bothered then he’s fine the next day. also when hes out its almost like hes shaking ??? but i saw him moving his nose really fast that could mock the shaking is that a sign they are scared? he moves around well, i think im learning still on how to read him. i have faith in time it will all work out. hes an older bun. not sure if that makes a difference, but this my assumption is since he was at a petting zoo hands scare him and he associates being picked up with hands and rough kids. i have to let him learn that im not rough. he is also a pain to get in a carrier so that i can transport him to where i want to move him. i want to get a leash but i think its too soon to try and pick him up and take him places. i thought about getting a long sleeve shirt and just practice picking him up not worrying about getting scratched so the confidence is there.

as far as picking up, your first step is establishing trust. you can do this by sitting on the floor with a quiet activity and let him come up to you. but don’t pet him, don’t reach out. just let him explore you, smell you. after awhile you can see if he will tolerate a pat on the head and try to feed a him a small treat. once he begins to realize you are not going to hurt him, you can start lifting him for just a few seconds, while still on the ground, and then setting him back down. if he doesn’t run off right away, offer him another treat. this will possibly take weeks. but it’s worth doing it slowly. like you said, he’s older, so it’s possible that you’ll have to undo some damage. have you read the Language of Lagomorphs site? it has great info for reading the specific body language.

Thanks Beka! there was one day that he let me pick him up with out squirming and i was in there a while so i think that might be the idea there. I have read the Language of Lags however Moreland is a lop and his ears are hard to read. What would you say about his shaking? or breathing? i think they are not shakes but from him breathing and moving his nose a mile a minute.

he might be a bit nervous, or it might be from him exploring and wanting to take everything in. i’m not entirely sure about the lop ears. i recently got my Maxie who is of the lop variety and i can’t always tell what his ears are doing, but you can also read body position.

On the subject of cleaning your carpet, do you have a shop vac? (If you don’t you can pick up a little for one for about thirty bux at walmart).

Dump water on the area and suck it up with the shop vac, repeat repeat Use baking sode in the water too
