My bun is pretty good with using the litter box.  I still find poop outside the cage but the urine is always in the litter.  That’s really my mine concern.  My question is regarding what to use?  I currently use Carefresh Ultra which seems to be working fine.  However, Ziggy has started covering it with his hay.  I can’t really tell how much he’s eating versus how much he’s using for the litter box.

Is this normal?  I usually come home to find the litter box covered with hay.  Should I just save myself the Carefresh and use hay as litter?

It is normal that he is covering it with hay. Mine does too. You don’t want to use hay as litter because it is not absorbent enough and your bun will end up sitting in it’s own waste or possibly getting urine scald. I use Yesterday’s News now and I like it. I have started using a little less. I used to fill up the pan about 3 inches thick but then was finding it was hard to separate the used litter from the unused and needed to dump the whole pan every time I changed it. Now I fill it about 1.5 inches thick and use hay in the front (even though my bun will still spread it around.) That way when I dump the whole pan I don’t feel like I’m wasting half of it. If you’re happy with Carefresh and you feel it is absorbent enough then you are in good shape to stay where you’re at. I knew my old litter wasn’t as absorbent as it needed to be when my bun started leaving wet foot prints in his pen.

Yea my rabbits do this as well. I think its because they are searching threw their hay to eat certain pieces. I also use the Carefresh Ultra. I use about 2 inches of it.. I put the hay in front.Pretty much the same way as Kbana mentioned above. It saves on litter and hay use as well.

Thanks for the help on this. Especially with the amount to use. I was probably putting to much and wasting a lot. I switched yesterday to Aspen shavings for cost and because I can use those shavings for my corn snake’s substrate and my budgies pan. Much easier just using 1 product for the whole farm. haha!
