I got this bunny almost 2 weeks ago, her name is Tiptoe and she’s an absolute doll! She’s still quite small (2 months old) and she won’t use her litter box. She gets poop and pee everywhere! I’ve picked up her poop and threw it in the litter box and I even give her (not too many) treats when she jumps into the box to encourage her to use it more often, but she’s just not getting it!

My other bunny, Trix, I got him at 3 months old (he’s now about 5 months old) and he learned how to use his litter box in 2 days flat! (Both bunnies are in separate rooms before we bond them because neither are spayed/neutered yet)

I’m wondering if it’s because Tiptoe is still young that she isn’t learning how to use her litter box yet? The litter box is the same size vertically as Trix’s, and Tiptoe has shown to be able to jump into it with ease, but she still won’t use it. Do you guys have any tips maybe to help with this?? Thank you!!

Some bunnies are just better than others at litter box training. My bun learned it in 1 day, but there are many other buns who don’t get it after weeks or months, and it’s even more difficult if the bun isn’t neutered/spayed.

Tiptoe is too young to be spayed, but Trix should be old enough to be neutered. Meanwhile you can continue soaking Tiptoe’s pee up in a paper towel and tossing it into the litter box together with her poop, then wipe the pee spot up with some vinegar to get rid of the scent. Since both rabbits are not fixed, either one of them can still potentially lose their litter habits when they smell each other’s scent on you and feel the need to be territorial.

Hi Daisy..i managed to get my bunny to understand he need to pee in his litter box by nudging or shoo’ing him into his litter box before or when i realised his pee’ing elsewhere..
mayb u can try this method..bunnies normally will lift up their butt/tail when they wan to pee/poo

As excited as everyone gets about their bunnies being litter trained so early, don’t hold out hope. Hormones are starting to come into play, which is going to make litter training extremely difficult. Not impossible, but difficult. The best thing you can do is set a foundation that will carry over after being fixed.Wiping the pee up and putting it in the litter box, picking up poos and doing the same, and nudging/putting her in it when she’s about to pee. It also helps to have food/hay where the litter box is because most bunnies will poop and eat at the same time. Lastly, you can see what corner she pees in most, as most bunnies tend to pick a corner. Just put her litter box there.

!! Thank you!! I really hope it doesn’t take months, but it’s better than Tiptoe taking years to learn!! I’m getting Trix neutered in another month (wanted to make sure he’s at least 6 months old before doing so!!)

I’ll try the paper towel, thank you!! I usually only washed it away with a rag, never thought to use a paper towel!!
