I have a 9 week old male lionhead bunny who I only purchased last friday. I wanted to start litter box training him as soon as I could so that he wouldn’t have to hop around in any poop I couldn’t spot clean when I wasn’t home. I got him a litter box yesterday. I put the same bedding I use for his cage in the litter box. Is that okay or will that confuse him? He still hasn’t picked that corner to go to the bathroom in. He goings everywhere. It might be right next to his food bowl or in one of the back corners. He goes everywhere but the litter box, which I put poop and pee in that I find around his cage. Am I starting litter box training to early? Is there anything I can do to help him understand better of what I am asking of him. Once he knows that he has to go to bathroom in the litter box I want to teach him to use the box out of his cage too. Can anyone give me tips on training him? Thank you!

Take the bedding out of the cage, and put it only in the litter box. Otherwise, it will indeed confuse him. Put a pile of hay in the litter box too, as buns like to eat and go at the same time.

What if he sleeps in the litter box? He seems to love to sleep in there. Which I wish he didn’t because it is full of pee and poop.

Oh my gosh! Your cute little bun has a skunk stripe down his face just like my Wooly!!! Eeeeeeeee!

Uh hm. Anyway, yes, sleeping in the litter box is extremely normal. My two do it all the time and they really don’t care that there is poo and pee in there. Gross, I know.

Sleeping in the box is normal. Rabbits are fairly clean…. they clean themselves probably a thousand times a day. They don’t stink at all, so sleeping or flopping in a litter box should be no problem

Thank you! Do you think once he gets to know me better he will calm down with going to the bathroom out of his cage. I would love for him not to pee on my bed. Hahaha!

I would keep him off of your bed for the time being

I also got my bunny at 7-8 weeks old and she wasn’t allowed near places I did not want her to be. I just let her be in a rabbit proofed area (neat idea cubes with zip ties are great!) and I watched where she did her business. I put the litter box in that corner, along with some hay and she caught on. There were some stray poops, but I threw the poops into the litter box. It shows her ‘you go here.’

Litter training will improve when you get your bunny fixed It is really good to start early!

Welcome.   I have to ditto LBJ10’s “eeeee!” I love his face markings. How cute!

You may find he’ll stop sleeping in the box once the bedding is out of the cage and he hopefully starts littering only in the box.
As for the bed….beds seem to be too irresistable for bunnies, even the older altered ones. He might come good for a time and have some relapses. Time will tell.

Smudge still naps in the litter box occasionally. Silly bun.

Keep your bun off the bed for now, if he keeps peeing there. At least til he is neutered, and completely trained. Then you can try again. No guarantees though!
