When we adopted our first bunny, Luna we had a regular sized litter pan, but since then we have adopted Shadow and my boyfriend decided that the “kids” needed a bigger “bathroom” since they have to share. Now the litter box they share is huge. it was originally the bottom of a bunny starter cage. Is it possible to encourage our buns to use a slightly smaller litter tray so I can have my cage bottom back for other uses. Also it’s a pain to clean and uses ALOT of litter. Any advice would be great.

what are the dimensions of the cage bottom?  do they only use it to potty, or do they use it for napping and lounging too?

hi 2buns2luv! welcome to Binky Bunny

Yes – it might be worth switching them to a smaller litterbox. My bunnies don’t seem to much care if we swap boxes. If you’re concerned they may not want to use it, then move some of the contents from their current dirty box into the new one to help scent it as a litterbox for them. I’d play it by ear to see how it goes – you may end up needing to swap it for two, since it was so large.

Thanks for the great advice. Umm as for the dimensons it’s pretty big haha. The original cage was a “living world” brand extra large bunny resort starter house. We use the bottom of the cage (minus the wire top) as their litter box. They’ve dug away the litter in one corner of the litter box and often sleep there curldes up together. They also seem to like “tossing” the litter all over the place, especially after clean up day. If I were to try 2 litter pans are there any that you have tried, you would recommend?

~*~ thank you for the welcome also.~*~

i dont think they need a litter box that big i dont think they would mind if you reduced the size, they may also only lie there because it is so big, they would probably lie somewhere else if it was smaller so i wouldnt worry to much about it.

For the therapy bunnies we used the $1 store rubbermaid, dishpan boxes.  They were super cheap and the perfect size.  W my own bunny condo, Leo & Jessica have a corner box and the dishpan.  I had to add the corner box, b/c there was still a small space that was being used as a potty.  So to keep it all from becoming a mess, I added the small corner litterbox.  They like having the 2 litterboxes b/c they can both poop together w/o being scrunched up.  Even w/ that Leo still lays in his litterbox every now and then.  Also, Leo was never “litter trained” when I initially got him.  He just used the bottom of his cage as his litterbox, instead of the room as his potty.  He adjusted to the litterbox fairly easy.

i would get two regular sized cat litterboxes and put litter in both and stick them side by side in place of the cage bottom.  i’ll bet they’ll pick one or the other to use and you’ll be able to take away the unused one.  wash it out and put it away in a closet somewhere as a spare, or use it in another room.

Thank goodness for having the internet at work. thanks so much for the tips. I was able to call my boyfriend during my work shift and he was able to purchase a cat litter tray from our local pet-store (needless to say we’re regular customers) So far so good, they have been peeing in the new “box. A few “bunny balls” are outside the litter tray but will have to see how they go. Thanx again for the tips.

Well, we have installed the girls new “bathroom” they seemed pretty interested in it at first. We’d placed some of the litter from their old box into the new one to encourage the use of the new toilet. The first night went well, no pee patches on the carpet and the bunny balls were mostly in the new litter box. This morning was a totally different story. Luna had decided to no only do some renovations in her house by moving ALL her toys into the middle of the pen but she had decided that the new bathroom needed over-hauling also. Almost every last piece of litter was out of the tray and she was sitting proudly in the middle of the mess as if to say “hi mummy, you like what I did, looks good huh”

Gunna give the new litter box another few days and see if they like it. We may resort to putting another tray in there just for digging.
