Litter box questions

Hi, I’m Alli and just found this forum.  We have a one year old rabbit named Comet, and he’s been using his litter box faithfully for several months now.  We have a corner litter box in his cage, but he chews on it a lot.  The front edge of the box has been chewed down enough that the litter and poo get kicked around when he jumps in and out of the box, which makes cleaning up after him more difficult.  Before I simply replace the litter box with a new one, I wanted to try to find something “chew proof.”  He has chew toys as well as wooden hide-away, in addition to a steady supply of timothy hay.  Besides his rabbit food, he gets something fresh each day, like carrots and an apple slice.  I don’t think he’s lacking things to chew on.  I’m also worried that chewing on the plastic could make him sick.  Comet comes out to play daily, so gets his excercise and has time to run around.

If anyone has a suggestion to stop him chewing on the litter box OR knows of a litter box that is both chew-proof (or at least chew-safe) and can be clamped to the cage (he likes to rearrange his stuff), I’d really appreciate it.  Thanks!

Hey Alli! Welcome! You should post a pic of Comet so we can meet him!

I would also be worried about Comet digesting the plasic. I’m sure someone here will have some good ideas for you. Sounds like a lucky bunny!!! What kind is he?

One thing I would be wary of is, how much carrots does he get a day? Carrots are actually high in sugar and should be given very sparingly.

Welcome Alli ! Is Cornet chewing on the front of the box while he is in it or out? If he’s doing this while in the box, I’d try a rectangular box for his next one. You can put some hay up the front that he can chow down on instead of the plastic. Also, as rabbits seem to like to back up to the end while in there, he won’t be able to reach the front as easily like he can in a corner style box.

Other than that, maybe you could get some lengths of chew safe wood and cut a slit halfway up lengthwise, then fit this over the edges of the box sides? It would be good for for his teeth to chew on and removable for when you come to clean the box.

welcome here! i prefer using cat litterboxes, the medium size (about 12×16 inches) over the corner critter boxes. this gives plenty of room for doing their business, lounging, and munching on some hay! not only are they half the price generally, but they have higher, thicker sides, so that might help with your chewing (and kicking litter out) problem. to attach it to the side of the cage, you can drill one hole in the side, about one inch from the top. loop a ziptie thru it loosely, then attach to the side using a dogclip.

that’s what i use to secure my hay box to the side of the cage.  here’s a pic.  you’ll see on the far left of the pic there’s a black ziptie, and all the way out of the pic, there is a little glint of gold.  that’s the gold dogclip that i use to secure.  it’s great because you can easily take it apart when it’s time to clean, but the buns can’t budge it.

on either side of them are their two medium cat boxes…
