litter box + hay rack

Hi all..

im hoping i can get some good ideas here..i’ve googled, i’ve read forums, i’ve ask ard..no solution yet..

im trying to find a way tt is the best hay placement in the cage/litterbox for me n my bunny..

i’ve tried..
1. putting hay in litter box.. but he just mess ard n pee on them..n end up hungry thru out the day..
2. Hay in hay ball.he pull out everything..eat some..then end up pee on them..n end up hungry..
3. Hay feeder separate frm litter box..it worked for a few days after training…but after a few days..he end up messing the hay all over the  cage n pee n poo everywhere in the cage when no1 is ard..
4. Hay rack above litter box..he will try to pull out everything (many times violently)..or give up n beg for food when im ard..
recently,,he will push the litter box away frm the wall and try to “eat” (he just pick a few) frm the hay dropped between the gap..and pee there

im not sure if other bunnies are like this..even his fav alfalfa hay (which i feed him morning n evening) in a bowl which he would finish EVERYTHING..but he would shove out the hay, shove/throw and push the food bowl ard while he eats..

hahaha…i realli out of wits..
im feeding him timothy as his main staple now..i considering changing hay..n see if it would be better..but frm the way i see him eats his favourite alfalfa…i doubt soo…

You can still keep the hay in the litter box and have a divider separating it. I just toss the hay in a big pile on the litter box, and they’ll scatter it around, which is fine. The wood pellets under some mesh make it so the pee trickles down. Honestly, yes they pee on the hay a little, but they’ll pick through the hay, poop on the hay isn’t a big deal.

How old is he? If he’s over 6 months old he should not be eating alfalfa. Alfalfa hay and pellets are for growing bunnies under 6 months. After 6 months if you’re still feeding alfalfa based things, he may be producing excess cecals due to the rich diet and he could become overweight. Yes, alfalfa is tastier, but they really should be eating timothy or orchard. If he doesn’t like timothy, try orchard as it is sweeter than timothy. If he doesn’t eat the timothy or anything else, take a look at his eating schedule. Make sure all non-hay feedings occur 10-12 hours apart. it will force him to eat hay if he’s truly hungry, no matter what type of hay

Hi Asriel and Bombur,

His going to be 17 wks this wk..still a kiddo..
i know bunnies will pee n poo on their hay..but my bunny tend to pick some n pee on the rest..he plays with his food when its lying ard..
if u put a mountain at a side of his litter box..when u come back after work..it would be spread across the litter box, flatten n peed on..n u hav no choice but to top up..cos the hay are all soiled..and the cycle goes on…..

i did refused to feed him alfalfa a few times..else he wouldnt even touch timothy

i’ve been looking at divider options to separate the hay in the litter box..but i dun realli know how..cardboard is definitely out of the qn.. and it cant be sth he is able to hop in..cos my bunny will just hop in and make a mess..
my bunny chew n try to fling things out of the way..i witness him pull/drag/lift n drop his litter box away frm the wall with his mouth once

he always do all the notti things when we turn our back at him..haha..

We tried every setup imaginable, including designing some of our own, and still ended back at big piles of hay in big litterboxes. Kieko is our exception….she requires a specific large red casserole be piled high with hay and placed next to her litterbox so she can still eat hay and poop at the same time. She’s also an exception because she is an extremely tidy bunny!

@JackRabbit – awwww ..tt is sooo nice…mine a violent messy eater..im considering getting a big litter box for him..those 55cmX44cm ones and put the hay one on side..but it would take up 1/3 of his cage..soo i dunno if its a good idea anot..

My boys do the same, its not a big deal to just keep topping up yeah you waste a bit of hay, but eating pee soaked hay won’t kill him. There’s storage boxes you can buy that have a divider in them so you don’t really need to do anything except just refill the hay and litter. I change my litter 2-3 times a week, so there’s not really a ton of waste. I’d show a picture, but I’m on my phone on vacation. If you have instagram, you can check my box @asriel_and_bombur

Middle picture 4th row I use the Binky Bunny store litter box with mesh. Bombur can’t hop into a storage box with his EC, but this works the same!

Yeah we just use a high sided storage box as a litter tray with wood pellets in it and then I just throw a huge pile of hay in and Garf just rummages around eating I’ve tried a hay rack and he just always pulls it out anyway so it’s pointless for us!

@GarfyTheLop..YEA mine loves to do tt too..he digs n pull ..he even shake the bars using his teeth/mouth..the inner hay always seems nicer….

i guess i will go get a bigger litter box then..

@ Asriel and Bombur – yeaa…mine always chill on the shelf too..n he would ask to be pet n massaged there 

btw,..would it be ok if the litter box takes up 1/3 of the cage?

I think mine takes up that amount? Maybe 1/4, either way, as long as he can still hop and stretch out its totally fine ? mine love to just chill and sleep in their litter boxes so I don’t have an issue with space.
