        Hello all.

I’ve had my girl Ripley for approx 5 years now (we believe she’s about 7 or 8 years old).  She is spayed.  Black lionhead.

Off and on we notice that she likes to dig her litter box up.  This has been occurring more frequently in the last few weeks.  She starts it as early as the day after we clean their pens and change out their litter boxes.  I give her fresh hay morning AND nighttime with the presumption that she is searching for fresh hay.  She doesn’t pee outside of her litter box, but she still throws her litter all around.  We let her out throughout the daytime and always in the evenings.  I assume maybe she is just bored, but she has plenty of toys and chewables in her pen.  She is not sick or ill.

Any ideas why she may be doing this?

Some bunnies just like to do this, and decide it is fun one day! You can get a litter box screen to prevent it. You can also provide a “digging box” to help satisfy that instinct.

I’ve seen people use shredded paper, play sand, and even organic potting soil… depends on how messy you want things to get!

Also be warned some buns will just use the digging box as a litter box… so I think some ppl will use paper so they can just throw it out if it gets soiled.

Here’s one with shredded paper 🙂
