I have recently got 2 mixed breed baby buns and they are almost getting to grips with the litter training, we’re good with peeing in it but the poops are still everywhere!
They seem to be going through a lot of litter so I’m wanting suggestions of a cheap alternative to the pet store rabbit litter I’m currently using it works perfectly fine it’s just a little pricey.
I keep looking in supermarkets at recycled wood/paper pellet cat litter, however most seem to be pine scented so I’m reluctant to buy this and scared it will cause problems if they try and eat it. Does anyone know if this is safe to use? Or any suggestions on what to use and where to purchase an inexpensive litter.

Hey there! Baby buns tend not to get the hang of litter training until neutered/spayed, because of hormones. But its not impossible, just takes a bit longer!

Cat litter can be highly toxic to bunnies. The scents, and most of them have baking powder/soda in it. Rabbits have super sensitive lungs and respiratory systems, even a change in scent affects them. Candles, air fresheners, wax melts, these all pose a risk for your bun. Cat litter is toxic if eaten as well, so I would highly suggest steering clear of all of them.

I use the non-scented CareFresh, its just plain recycled paper. I buy it because it keeps the smell in, it is super absorbent, and easy clean up. With just my one bunny, a couple handfuls will last him 3 days. With our bonded pair, it lasts about two days.

Even after the three days, it doesn’t soak through the bottom of his litter pan (depending on how heavy handed i am with it) so I don’t have to wash it out, and it just comes right out.

Although, the litter box I have is a plastic corner one with a metal grate on it so my bun (who loves to sit in his mess!) doesnt get urine all over him. I think it helps with not soaking through because there isnt constant pressure on the wet litter which would make it stick to the bottom.

Anywho, my suggestion is definitely carefresh! I live in the US, so hopefully its not super expensive in the UK. I glanced on Amazon.com and it didnt look like it was a lot. Just make sure its not scented! Best of luck!!

I use the pets at home own brand of wood pelleted cat litter. It’s not scented or anything and has no additives. It’s roughly £5.50 for a bag. One bag lasts me about a week but I change two litter trays daily

Wood pellets are the best! It takes literally 2 seconds to clean the litter box. Dump, wipe with a paper towel, refill. The pellets soak up all the urine so it doesn’t stick to the box. It also doesn’t smell bad. In the US you can get a 40 pound bag for $7, so it will last for a long time.

They’re probably going to be doing territorial poops until they’ve been fixed and bonded. I have two neutered-unbonded boys that are constantly marking their territory via poop, and it’s a hassle xD

Thank you for the advice I will try pets at home for the pellets, I have tried using carefresh but I was changing it everyday but I think that might be because my buns love to sit in it ?might work better if I get a litter tray with a grate on top.
I will be glad when they’re old enough to get them neutered, I’m constantly scooping up poop and putting in the litter tray to show them where they should go. I’ve also just had to tie it in the corner of the cage as one of them decided it would be better in the middle of the cage but then still pees in the corner ?

It’s super useful if you get wood pellets AND a litter box with a grate on top. That way you can control the smell and not worry about the bunnies sitting in it or eating it. Easy to clean and worry-free

I second the pets at home suggestion. I swear by it and won’t use anything else, both because of price and quality. They had a supply issue in my area a few months back so they reduced another brand to match the price they sold theirs for so I bought that and it was awful in comparison. Now it’s back in stock I make sure I buy as many bags as I can so I don’t run out. I’ve never had any smell issues and they’ve never tired to eat it or anything

I have been to my local pets at home and could only find the wooden pellets that are pine scented ☹️
However by chance went in my local The Range store and found a big bag of Natures Own cat litter (wooden pellets), it’s bunny safe and was £8 for 30L. I was paying around £7 for a 10L bag at the pet store. ? hopefully this will be helpful for anyone else in the UK

I’m so sorry I realised after and forgot to update, the pets at home litter I use does have a pine scent. Or supposedly. I can’t say I can smell it. It’s a really good option if you’re still wanting to try
