What sort of pine? Pelleted or shavings. Pine shavings are not recommended for rabbits. YN is ok. I heard the cat one is cheaper too but it’s the same stuff as the Small Animal/rabbit one. The paper based ones are good for absorbtion and odour.

I spent like 20 minutes today staring at all the bedding at the pet store. I felt pretty stupid for not just buying something and leaving. We are using a paper based one, but I’m not a fan of it as it’s a bit dusty. I’m not usually all “save the planet” and crap, but there are a lot that are made from the waste pulp or whatever it is after making paper that can’t be used for anything else. Many say somewhere on the package that they are free of the oils and whatever that are in pine/ceder that are bad for bunnies. Of course I’ve seen a whole ton of people here recommend YN. Freya’s a digger and I wasn’t sure how she’d like a change that drastic so we picked one called Carefresh. It’s much like the one she has now in texture but with, it says, virtually no dust.

Yesterday’s News is just fine. I use that when my favorite “aspen supreme” is out of stock. Pine pellets are okay, (unless DJ is sneezing) but pine shavings are not.   The pine pellets have compressed and processed out the oils that have been noted to cause liver problems – so as long as they are pelleted, they typically are okay.

I have found that yesterday’s news is a not dusty and a good alternative!  I mean once you get to the end of the bag, it may have some dust, but typically, my experience has been rather dust free.

My vet asked me what litter I was using and I told her, she said it’s fine. I also mentioned that if Freya gets picky at all or is wierd about it we’ll try YN. She was like “you can’t use cat litter for a bunny!!!” I don’t think she knew that it wasn’t some old clumpy bad for bunny stuff.

I use Equine Fresh for my buns! Its WONDERFUL!!!! I clean out their boxes every other day, and you would swear I do it every day, every hour, you can’t smell a thing, and NONE of my buns are fixed…. yet! =) To top it off its about $6.00 for a 40 lbs bag, it lasts me around a month!

Thank you all so much.I was using shavings but I did not know they were toxic! I was concerned about the price of other litters but wow was it ever worth it to change DJ completely stopped sneezing and has no more dust around his nose.We switched to completely YN.
PS They do not carry equine pine and feline pine in my area.

You can also use wood stove pellets that is pretty much same thing as feline pine and equine fresh. Very cheap also. If you do try it, be sure to get pellet without accelerant added (some do as it’s a heating product.) Also, it does have a woody smell so if DJ is sensitive to that, perhaps stick to YN.
