Does anyone else use wood stove pellets for litter? I heard about it on one of the rabbit sites a long time ago. I started using it because it is really cheap($7-8 for a 40lb bag) and it keeps the smells down. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it isn’t comfy for him to lay on and once it gets wet it expands and is kinda tough to clean up.

Anyone have other suggestions that are comparable in price?

I love wood pellets!! I just put a lot of hay on top to make it more comfy… and I change it at least 2x a week. I just put a thin layer in the litter pan- just enough to cover the bottom and I never have any trouble cleaning it. I just rinse with water, sometimes swipe with a paper towl if there’s anything stiicking to the pan, and once a week I let it soak with half and half white vinegar/water before rinsing with water. I don’t know of anything that works as good for the same price, maybe someone else will….

There isn’t too much else out there that is inexpensive and works well. What I’ve ended up doing is using 1 big bag of Yesterday’s News mixed with 1 big bag of Aspen Supreme to keep the smell down. I have never used the wooden stove pellets so I don’t know how they would do if you mixed them with a regular litter to soften it up in texture a little. I was also going to suggest adding a layer of hay over the top and as for cleanup, I think you’re stuck unless you go a whole other route for litter.

i use newspaper, which is very cheap, free for me because i take it from my mom when she is done reading, and cover it with a thin layer of hay so its comfy to lay on. i also put baking soda in the pan which elimainates odor entirely and was about $5 for a 15 lb. bag at costco, which i’ve only used about half of since i got my rabit 5 months ago. works well, easy to clean up, and is very inexpensive

That’s a great idea SnuggleBunny. Thanks for sharing!
