When I picked up our two new bunnies today, the pet store owner indicated that he had some young lionhead X Netherland dwarf rabbits.  I looked at them and they did appear to have longer hair around the head.  I wanted them more than the ones my daughter picked out but I went with the bunnies she wanted.  Have any of you had much experience with lionhead X Netherland dwarf cross?

I have a male lionhead and a female lionhead dwarf mix, they both need a lot of brushing. I have to brush them everyday or they get knots and look scraggly. My male is pretty laid back now but he wasa hyper little thing when he was a baby, couldn’t sit still for a second. My female is a rescue and I have only had her for a little over a mth. she is still pretty nervous but is statering to come around, she will even walk up to me know for a petting. If ya get a lionhead get a good comb and be prepared to be suckered by that cute face, it’s hard to be mad at them for chewing my new shoes when they give that “i’m sorry mommy i didnt mean to” look.

*oops! I wrote this before I saw your other posting about the timothy hay – I’m glad you were able to get some!*

            Hi 2old4rabbits!

I doubt you are really too old for rabbits I plan to have rabbits the rest of my life! I have a couple netherland dwarfs from shelters so I am not sure what either of them are crossed with, but neither of them look very lionhead-ish.

Have you had rabbits before? There is lots of good information on this site to help you out with diet, cages, litter training etc. I would highly recommend taking your bunnies to the vet to get sexed before they get too old, just because sometimes the pet stores can get the sexing incorrect because the bunnies are so young, and if you wait too long you might wake up one morning and have 10 bunnies instead of 2! Also, just generalizing (and I could be completely wrong concerning the particular store you went to) – but often pet stores will recommend pellets that look really good for bunnies, but actually aren’t. The best pellets are just plain pellets with no corn or seeds or other things in them. Were you able to get Timothy hay at the store? Sometimes pet stores don’t carry it, but I’m pretty sure you can get it at Petsmart. Since this is the most important part of their diet, let us know if you need any help tracking some down.

Post some pics of the bunnies if you have time! I’d love to see them!

Your subject line made me laugh b/c I have a lionhead AND a netherland dwarf.  They are like polar opposites in personality, cleanliness, & attitude.  My lionhead is an “cartoon exploding cigar type” since he has the mane and some fringiness around his bottom.  He also has a HUGE powder puff tail.  It’s absolutely huge compared to Jessi’s little dwarf knubby tail.

As moo said…get them to the vet & have them sexed ASAP!  Many pet store buns end up going home pregnant or w/ a partner that will be impregnating them very soon.  I think that’s what Moo was talking about…..
