Hi everyone! I have a 2.5 year old lionhead bunny that is currently molting like crazy. Last night I noticed that he hadn’t pooped as much and when I woke up this morning, there were some small and abnormally shaped poops in his litter box. I brushed him really well this morning and got a TON of fur off of him, so I’m hoping that will help. I just fed him a handful of wet cilantro as well, but he hasn’t pooped at all since I woke up. Should I be concerned?

Absence of poop is always a concern. My advice is give him 0.5 -1 ml (cc) simethivone baby gas drops every hour for 3 hours. If he’s still not eating or pooping after 3 doses, I’d contact a vet.

A vet can give sub q or iv fluids and determine if there is a GI blockage. If there isn’t a GI blockage, they can give gut motility drugs like Reglan or cisapride. If there is a blockage, they’d concentrate on giving fluids, in the hope that the blockage will move through.

I had a very fluffy teddy lionhead bun that at one time pooped out a string of 12 connected poop 😳

When my bun has stomach issues from molting I find on top of the advice Bam gave plus a stomach massage really helps. Search for Howcast bunny stomach massage on youtube and you should see a good tutorial. I often end up with a pile of poops on my lap and a much happier bun.

I give my buns a bit of fresh pineapple when they are molting. The enzymes in the pineapple helps break down the fur and reduces risk of GI blockage.
