My 9-year-old one half of a bonded pair the beloved Minui passed away one month ago.
The last four weeks have seen a remarkable transformation in her bonded partner Midi, who we adopted together with Minui when they were around six months old. (We were able to allow Minui several hours of grieving with Midi)
I was preparing for grieving and even not-eating but instead Midi has become rejuvenated. Previously, she never liked to leave her cage too much or sometimes at all and was content to allow Minui to explore. Minui was a sociable rabbit, happy to be caressed and even held. Midi rarely left her cage, grunted when touched or approached and did not want to interact with us at all. That was fine; they got on well together and looked out for each other.
(We opted not to find another bunny to bond with Midi because of her age, her previous grumpy manner and the fact you can’t buy single rabbits here in Switzerland).
Since Minui passed, Midi roams the whole apartment playfully, has started climbing and jumping and generally exploring like she did when she was very young. None of the kids’ toys escapes a nuzzle and nudge. And she now loves being touched and caressed and has now started coming up to us and our young kids to be stroked and played with. It is frankly inspirational and emotional to see. Rather than mourning, she is a bunny reborn.
Has anyone else ever experienced something similar?
