I think our guinea pig has lice, but we can’t get him to the vet til Tue. They are very small, long, off white & we can see them moving. **shivers**

We are going to treat the GP w/Avantage today, I don’t want to wait that long.

Can our two rabbits get them? Should we treat them too?

I know nothing about lice! I am assuming this is contagious to people to if this actually lice. Are they all over or located in just one place – like the rear?

Does Advantage take care of lice? I know it doesn’t take care of mites, and I only thought it handled fleas.

This is a brand new one for me. Never in all the years that I have been doing rabbit boards, have I ever heard of lice – so maybe it is a guinea pig thing.

          I will have to research.

The lice that GP’s have are host specific, when I called the vet, she said that we can’t get them, but she was unsure about rabbits. I hope she can tell us by Tue.
On Guinea Lynx, a GP forum a lot like BB, there is info that Advantage is good for lice & fleas.

BB, if you’ve never heard does that mean lice aren’t realy a problem with rabbits?

We have been keepimg the GP & bunnies apart even though they are in the same room. We read that pasteurella & bordetella are deadly to piggies, & as you know most buns carry it & are asymptomatic.

It’s interesting how much they are alike.

It just means I haven’t come across lice in rabbits but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I actually did a quick google and found that rabbit can get lice (don’t know if is tis the same as the ones that infest GP)

Here are some articles I found where Dana Krempels was answering someone else’s question about lice treatment on rabbits.

I love learning something new….even if it’s gross.

There is always a Dana Krempels answer to any bunny health question!  Good sleuthing, BB.

Thanks! I know…Dana is amazing. When in doubt, search Dana out! I do usually make a list of “stumpers” and then pile them all up on Dr. Harvey, but lately, there have been many “have to know now” questions.
