So Levi has been here about a week and two days, took him home last monday at night.Today and yesterday he’s been more active,so I’m hoping that means he is starting to feel better and recover from his respritory infection! He’s been so sassy haha when i fed him his celery treat he jerked it from me,like “That’s MY celery!Don’t touch!”.And he has been playing with his toy more,he has a wood strawberry chew toy but he seems to like some cat bell balls I got for him.And his poop and pee isn’t mainly in one spot like before (which had made it seem like he was mostly laying in the same pace all day)so I’m assuming he’s up and moving about more.Still sniffly and sneezes a bit but the sneezing is a bit less and he seems to breathe a little bit better!I also started feeding him less pellets because before i let him eat how ever much he wanted and he gets them evenings instead of morning this seems to be encouraging him to eat more hay.I am a little concerned about how much water he is drinking though,I dump it out and refill his water bowl every morning and when I get home from work not much has been drank at all!I don’t know how much bunnies normally drink. He isn’t too big I was told he is a bit over 2 months and born november 29th I don’t know if that’s true butI think he is between 2 and 4 months maybe and a mini rex so he is small.

Bunnies tend to poop/pee in one or two corners of their enclosure, so that’s not concerning. It helps a lot for litter training, so be glad if he’s going in just one spot. It’s good that he’s getting better with the infection, and the reduction in pellets to encourage hay eating. For the water, what could be useful is to measure it out before putting it into his dish, and then measuring it in the morning to see how much he’s drank throughout the day/night. Bombur was just diagnosed with EC, and he had been drinking 2 full water dishes a day, so we started measuring how much was in each dish to monitor him.

I could try that.and he wasnt peeing or pooping anywhere but in the middle except a few stray poops and he’d frequently be laying on that pile is what i meant. It wasn’t the same, now his pee is usually in the corners but not everything is in that one spot where he would lay

I know that pain all too well. My problem child, Bombur, takes all his hay out of his hay rack and pees in it, then sits in it for hours until I come home. He’s had 2 sanitary shaves in the past month.

A bun is supposed to drink 100 ml water per kilo body weight (roughly 2 pounds). That’s if the bun eats only dry food. If the diet contains veggies, it drinks considerably less. During antibiotic treatment, the water consumption can be higher.

It sounds like he’s feeling better though, that’s lovely news ?

Oh my gosh!I’m glad I don’t have to get Levi shaved. He did stop doing it which os what makes me think it was just from him being sick because he was not as active and maybe spent his time resting there. He still is sick but getting better.

Thanks bam and Asriel, I think I will try measuring his water the next couple days.Just to make sure. And he gets a bit of celery most days but I’m planning on including more veggies that would be an actual part of the meal and not a snack, just haven’t decided what and where to get it yet.

I used his syringe one day to make him drink a tiny bit of water and I guess he realized he was thirsty because then in his cage he started drinking normal again! And at the vet today I mentioned that he was shaking his head and scratching his ears and well he has an ear infection now too.So I have to go in twice a week now for pennicilin shots,I got him some flea and tick meds so he won’t get any of those (probabably a good idea because I work with dogs)and he gets ear drops now 6 drops in each ear twice a day.He doesn’t like the ear drops its so hard to get the right amount in he squirms and tries to scratch his ear and shake his head. And his weight went from 2.5 pounds to 2.8!

What did you get for flea and tick meds? bunnies can die from certain ones. they can’t have the same as what a dog or a cat can have.

I haven’t given him it yet,its what the vet gave me though. It’s revolution but the kind for kittens and puppies.

Revolution is bunny safe. There’s no special formulation for rabbits, you use the same as for kittens and pups. Substance name selamectin. It’s very good and very safe.

There is stuff to avoid, particularly fipronil (found in Frontline and Sentry and Effipro and other antiparasitics. It’s OTC, so that’s why we always issue a warning against it as soon as anyone mentions antiparasitics. it’s so easy to get hold of, yet deadly toxic to buns.

Lol yeah I have seen several lists with bunny safe foods mention celery.but as a snack and not too much of it.Its safe and not particularly bad just not as healthy as other veggies. And I think Levi’s ear infection seems to be getting better but he is still stuggling with the respritory one.Am having to gather resources again because I am almost broke haha I literally have 8 dollars just about but I have a few things I’ve been meaning to sell and also get payed soon. And food and bills for the month for both Levi and I are already taken care of,Just finding enough money for his shots.I have enough to ride the bus for a while so I’ll figure it out.I did happen to have a gift card from Christmas,Levi got a new log to play with and I got urine stain and odor remover!Yay!

Sometimes antibiotics need a longer course, and sometimes you need to switch do a different one. Think of it as puzzle pieces. Some antibiotics won’t fit, but when you find the one that does, it works very nicely to rid the infection over time.

Be sure to monitor his poops during antibiotic use so you can see if it’s messing with his gut.

Thanks wick,I have been.He is on a probiotic too.He is starting twice a week penicillin shots and is on something called tribrissen too.And his ear drops. He doesn’t like those haha it seems to make him uncomfortable. But the woman I know who fosters rabbits says that as his ear infection gets better it won’t be as uncomfortable for him when I give him those

That’s great to hear! It’s worth mentioning that if Levi’s ear starts feeling better, he’ll feel a bit better overall. This means his immune system may get a nice boost to help the URI.

I notice than when mine eat celery they pee soooooo much more.
                                              Its like 90% water !!!!!

They have endives and celery and the litter tray is like a swimming pool. They do not have water in their pen…. never used to put their nose in it. (They do when they’re outside in nice weather obviously, but they still don’t drink)

Re celery, i may be overthinking, but i cut it (or just snap it in two) across the fibres, just in case they suck it down and have an 8 inch bit of celery fibre in their intestines….

I cut celery too, in like 1/2 inch long pieces.

My Bam’s favorite is fennel. It’s good because it’s low in calcium.

So sometimes the antibiotics will kill a good portion of the infection, enough that symptoms stop so medication is stopped; however if a rabbit’s immune system weakens due to stress or another condition, the left over infection may take that opportunity to grow again and show up. Maybe that’s what they were trying to explain? Essentially it can come back if Levi’s immune system can’t continually suppress whatever infection amount is left over, if any. If it’s truly all gone, no worries. But we can’t stick a swab in their noses and wipe to check that, so you just need to be observant.

The behavior might be obnoxious at times, and all that pee and poop everywhere will make you want to tear your hair out, but it’s not the biggest concern. I agree that taking care of whatever is going on is top priority. At least he’s a strong little fighter
