I have read that bunnies use a variety of vocals to communicate, ex. purring, humming, growling, grunting
Huckleberry doesn’t really purr, at least not like the bunnies I see on YouTube, it sounds more like she is just chattering her jaw two or three times. She has NEVER hummed. She grunts/snorts when she is angry. I have been trying to really look for all of these sounds so that I can understand her better. I’ve notice a noise she makes that doesn’t sound like anything ever mentioned, she clicks! She makes noises similar to a person clicking their tongue. She does it when I come into the room, kind of like a greeting.
I just wonder, do bunnies learn some noises from other bunnies? (She was very very young, possibly too young, when I got her and she has never been around others) Is this a normal noise or did she pick it up from me somehow (I realize this is a little crazy sounding)?
How do your bunnies communicate? Do they do anything unusual?
I don’t really know any bunnies personally who make lots of noises, so I think it’s more normal than not for a bunny to be quiet. Mine will grind their teeth when they “purr”, but it’s something I feel while petting them and not something I can hear. Otto has hummed once or twice, but it’s so faint I could barely hear it over the tv. He might be doing it more often, but unless I was right next to him and the room was quiet I would never hear. He’s also grunted a few times. The only noise Hannah makes is grunting while she eats – it’s kind of like a piggy sound, because she’s so excited to be eating. lol
I’m sure some noises are learned from mom and siblings, while many are just instinctual.
Lolli tooth purrs and what I call clatter her teeth. I’ve only noticed her purring/clattering when I’m snuggling with her on the couch. When she clatters, it’s like she’s snapping her teeth together. It’s possible it’s the same thing that Huckleberry does. Other than that, she growls sometimes. Lately it’s been when I feed her. But she growls when she doesn’t want to be petted. Lolli’s noisy in other ways – like eating. She is a loud eater for a bunny. lol
I read on rabbit.org that some rabbits “mumble” to themselves. But I think it’s kind of rare. I’ve never heard either of my two honk either.
Oreo is pretty vocal I think…she certainly always has an opinion, whether it’s expressed audibly or not ![]()
She tooth purrs a lot whenever I pet or snuggle her. She also growls a lot when I’m in the way, cleaning her room/cage or when I do something she thinks is obnoxious. I lie on the floor and read a lot when I’m in the bunny room with her and she growls like crazy when she sees me turn the page. Something about that motion makes her reeeeally mad
She also makes a soft honking noise when she hears me get the treat bag, little piggy
I get honked at when somebunny passes by. It is so sweet
I love Chacha’s honks.
Zelda’s very quiet. She’ll toothpurr IF I’m allowed to pet her. She also hiccups because she eats her food too quickly!
They’re like people I guess. Some bunnies are more vocal than others!
Mango is very vocal. He mumbles and grumbles and he talks when he’s eating – I guess he’s enjoying his veggies. He also snores. My other rabbits are very quiet though.
I love my girl and the few noises she makes. 🙂
All of your buns sound so adorable!
Hannah is a piggy, huh? Huckles is too, but she doesn’t snort, she just doesnt understand why we dont bring her something when we go out to eat.
I bet Lolli and Chacha are doing something very similar to what Huckles does, its a bit like the keys tapping on a keyboard (I just realized) but there are only a couple in quick succession and then another set a little later.
LMAO at Oreo! “Don;t turn the page! I wasn’t done reading that yet!”
I HAVE to see a video of Zelda with hiccups, that sounds hilarious!
I would love to hear mumbles and grumbles lol “NOM NOM NOM YUM NOM NOM”
Peppy and Milo only ever do a little honking thing before they thump at me because they want something. Milo is very loud with it though…surprised me the first time I heard it. Remi used to be a lot more vocal, running around and making soft honking noises all the time. I think it’s subsided a bit since his neuter, so it might have been a hormonal thing. I would love to hear all the different noises buns make! Mine don’t have a great repetoire, lol.
With the exception of Pringles, mine are very quiet. Charlie will make that chattering sound sometimes, usually when he knows he’s about to be turned out in the house for play time.
Pringles has been known to snort, bark, growl, huff, sigh and blow a raspberry.
I hear Toby honk softly every now and then while I’m shredding his carrots, it’s so sweet.
I just get grunts out of Wooly that sort of sound like a guinea pig.

This reminded me of a picture I snapped of her a few nights ago while I was reading a magazine in her room. She flopped right on the corner of the magazine, effectively preventing me from turning the page ![]()

Chacha loves Cosmo too.
She loves my new “Shape” magazine and loved Julian Michaels so much, she decided to bite the magazine.. Hmm.
Pacey is very vocal. He grunts when he is mad or growls. He does lots of tooth purrs. And lately he has taken to honking about anything that he gets excited about especially when it is time for food. When he was a baby he would squeak when he was scared.
Smudge grunts alot. And when I say alot, I mean ALOT. She grunts while eating, while grooming, while sitting there staring at the wall. She’s quite vocal.
Monkey just growls. i have never heard a tooth purr from her that I can remember, little grumpy butt. But she’ll spend all day growling at my hubby
I swear its a game for her now, lets see how many times I can growl at daddy before he goes away! lol
Moose tooth purrs, he loves getting his jaws rubbed. Thats the only noise he makes.
And Squirrel… haven’t heard a thing from him yet ![]()
Olivia’s a honker and a grunter. Stormy is a frequent tooth-purrer (especially if we’re snuggling and I make tooth-purr sounds too.) He also makes little whimper sounds when I’m doing something horrible to him like getting his nails clipped. Bindi tooth purrs and stomps occasionally. But mostly he uses digging noises to communicate when he’s angry or frustrated at me.
Gabby has tooth purred a few times when she first came to live with us. She started what I call her honking/snorting sound when I wasn’t dropping the raisins and craisins fast enough for her and then she would slap at me with her front paws. She has started thumping about more when she gets aggervated at me or when she gets scared.
Squirrel tooth purred for me tonite
I had him on my lap while watching netflix, and he just settled in for a snooze, and tooth purred while I petted him ![]()
