Hey! I was just thinking in another thread that I have no idea how much I should actually be feeding Samson in Veggies, and I hope we’re not feeding her too much!
Anyone want to take a pic of the average veggie dish?
ETA, please don’t say 2-3 cups! I’m a visual person
If it helps at all, my local bunny shelter recommends that you feed (in loose bunches of veggies) a salad that’s about the size of two of the bunny’s heads. Try to put 3-4 types of leafy veggies in the salad every day to give your bunny some variety.
For one bunny I give 2-3 big lettuce leaves (romaine, red-leafy, or green-leafy) more if the leaves are the small inner leaves, half of a bok choy stalk (or a whole one if it’s smaller than my open hand), and a handful of parsley. Since I have 2 bunnies, I double that. This is my best guesstimate of 3 cups.
I’ll try to remember to take one when I give Chacha her veggies tonight
<3 Chacha
I will have to remember tomorrow morning!
Romaine and cilantro. No carrots lol..
Chacha: I HATE CAWWOTZ!
Occasionally, I’ll get her a small bucket of baby romaines that are in the produce sections of grocery stores. she can finish one in less than a day
That’s so funny she hates carrots! It took about 3-4 times of giving carrots for Samson to eat them, and I had to cut them up first lol. That looks about the same as I give Sammy though so thats good!
She is picky about everything . Hay, vegetables, toys… human slaves! LOL!
Oh, I’ve tried many times. She has even bite a small shred of carrot off and ran away.
Haha Ahh Chacha.
hahaha lovechacha that’s EXACTLY what was on the menu at my house tonight!!
Meant to do this last night, but forgot
but here’s what’s on the menu for tonight
oh, and please keep in mind that I’m trying to put a little weight on both my bunnies lol
That’s romaine on the left, rappini and baby broccoli in the middle, parsley on the right, and one cut up carrot and two brussel sprouts in the middle. They will both eat everything on there, except Penelope, would wouldn’t touch a brussel sprout even if I ran around the room chasing her with it! LOL
WOO! Awesome!
Come oN! I want to see more dinner plates!
I follow the guidelines set out in the House Rabbit Handbook, which says to weigh your portions. Hodari always eats approximately 3 to 4 oz. She herself weighs 3lbs 13oz. Today’s salad weighed 3.75 oz. It had cilantro, dill, oregano, parsley, escarole, endive, radicchio, arugula, a mix of baby lettuces, swiss chard, turnip greens, dandelion greens, rapini, and a sliver of carrot in it. I typically feed her at least ten different veggies at a time now. May have to cut back some in the winter, though.
Here she is next to it:
The basket is looking worse for wear. She jumps in it so I can hoist her onto the bed. It’s much easier than trying to pick her up!
Oh my! SHE IS SO CUTE *head explodes!*
Where did you get that bed from?
I might try a belgian endive. It looks like romaine, except when you keep pulling leaves off It that makes any sense lol. I don’t see it being bought often at work, but it looks LETTUCE like (and the diva likes red leaf and green leaf too) so I’ll try it
The romaines at my job are a bit skinny right now. The lettuce is usually very big -_-
Penelope LOVES endive, and she’s also super picky. Although she favors the curly endive, looks really close to plain old green leaf lettuce, but she tolerates the belgian endive. The curly endive is hard to find though, so she usually has to deal lol
ooO curly? wow so many different kinds! i’ve only seen belgian!
LoveChaCha: Thank you for the compliment! The bed came from Drs Foster and Smith. It’s called a twigloo, and it’s made of willow sticks. Hodari loves to sit in it. And eat it. Lol. I got her a new one a few months ago, but she’s still working on this one.
I think endive is one of Hodari’s top veggies, too. Hopefully ChaCha will like it, also! We just buy the regular type, but I have seen the Belgian type, too. It’s kind of white, isn’t it? Maybe I’ll get a head of it next week if it’s not too expensive.
My marble is super picky and won’t eat any veggies except for italian parsley (i wonder how she knows the difference between that and curly…) and full grown heads of romaine (she won’t touch baby romaine). It’s so frustrating because sometimes the grocery store has stuff that doesn’t look fresh and i get stuck on what to give her! She used to be better as a baby (she’d touch other lettuces and dandelion too) but now she’s just being a princess . My waffle on the other hand, will stuff anything in his mouth, including inedibles that are green in color (i caught him nibbling on some green craft foam the other day. thank goodness he didn’t swallow.)
That’s so funny wabble, Penelope won’t touch italian parsley, but LOVES curly, I’ve always wondered if there really was a taste difference or if it’s just a texture thing lol
Not sure if they demonstate proportion of food very well but here you go. The 2 younger boys get less then this as I’m building up what they can have. So tonights din was Celery tops & stems, Chicory (dandelion greens in the US?) Cos lettuce (Romaine), Carrot tops, Parsley, small bit of broccoli. Later I might give a bit of fennel bulb which they’ve been enjoying. I often give bits of things during the day when I’m home. Like willow, rose leaves or just celery because Jersey doesn’t eat hay so I want to get fibre into her however I can.
Normally they get curly endive, parsley, radacchio and maybe celery tops or tuscan kale. It does change depending on whats in season.
These dishes look so great! Funny thing about carrots… none of my buns liked them, but they love the carrot tops. So I eat the carrots, and my buns get the tops ^.^
But I primarily feed my buns timothy variety hay everyday, and romaine lettuce/parsley about twice a week. Bunny-safe fruit snacks rarely. I’m always afraid of the producing wilting … and I can only make it to the grocery store once every 7 – 10 days. How do you guys keep this stuff fresh for every day?
I’m hoping this situation changes next summer when my garden blooms. I’ve got a special place for my buns’ food ^^
I find the best way to keep produce fresh is simply wrapping it in a paper towel. You can buy all sorts of different bag, boxes, and other thingy-magigs but those really only get you a few more days than just wrapping it. Plus they can get expensive!
Well yes… the expensive part also cuts back on how often I can give my buns veggies and greens.
When you wrap it up in a paper towel – about how long do you store it in the fridge?
I never stored my buns greens for more than 3 days which only gives her 3 days worth of good green yummies til I go shopping again :\ – she eats the timothy variety hay in he meantime
I find Romaine keeps for awhile in the fridge, I buy the super packs that have about 6-8 heads of romaine in them, it lasts about 2 weeks. Maybe try a different brand? It should definitely not go bad after 3 days.
Nova: All of the veggies I buy last at least a week. Some, like romaine and rapini, are just particularly long-lasting and do well without any special care; just a paper towel will do. However, I use the special green veggie bags for a lot of my produce; you can buy them in the dollar store and they can be rinsed out and reused several times. You just squeeze the air out of them and wrap a dry paper towel around them to sop up any excess water – so many veggies are water logged when you buy them and it causes them to rot so much faster, contrary to what you’d think. Additionally, I own these containers from Progressive International:
Yeah, this all for my one little bunny. Ha, ha. The containers were ten dollars at Amazon. Well worth the price because stuff lasts and lasts in there. I can pick dandelions from our yard and they will last three or four weeks in there easily; they used to wilt within hours prior to getting these containers. In the veggie bags, I know that I can store a really large head of endive for almost two weeks, so that’s a big help also.
Hodari now gets to eat virtually everything I buy long before it goes bad.
I can’t take pictures but Hoppy gets radicchio, cilantro, endive and belgin endive daily and then I throw something new in there each time I go shopping to see if he will touch it, this week I am trying celery and parsley again, he use to eat them then stopped so I stopped buying them. He is very picky and won’t really eat any of the lettuces. I just give him everything in the morning and he eats it through out the day as he wishes. I currently think I feed him too much so I need to cut back. I just wrap everything in a paper towel and it lasts about 1 week. I give him a quarter of radicchio, a bunch of cilantro, 1/2 belgin endive and about 4 pieces of endive and then add a little of the new stuff at a time. That is a all day meal though so I think it is enough maybe a bit too much but he doesn’t look like he is getting fat so I am just not sure. He doesn’t always eat it all and I throw some away in the morning. He also eats his hay and pellets in the morning before I give him his veggies and while we are sleeping (I only know this because the hay is always gone or almost gone when we get up to clean his cage). The only fruit he likes so far is banana and he gets that like 1 time per week just a small chunk.
Mine love collard greens, cilantro and romain lettice and ocasional brocoli or calliflower or even a carrot. but if I give them more then once a week Mr. Hopper gets the runs poor guy.
This is prob the wrong place to put this but how can you tell if your bun is getting fat. And how do you help him loose weight if there are two bunnies and the share the same area?
@bullrider, post a new thread and photos!
little video at dinner time last night.
They are all so beautiful! I love watching rabbits eat.
This is a pid of Scribbles’ “sweets night” salad. His normal salad consists of leaf lettuce or kale, parsley, broccoli stems and radish tops. Once a week he gets carrots and baby bananas thrown in. He usually eats all the greens first, then the sweets.
Cinders I *think* that is way too much banana, they generally can have maybe 1 or 2 of those slices daily. Even if its just once a week it’s too much at one time…
Yes, definitely too much banana. One of those slices is enough (although your bunny might not think so )
What about dried bananas? Is that ok?
Dried bananas are fine but again in limited amounts as a treat.
Here’s Abby’s dinner for tonight. This is on a large dinner plate. We have a small piece of Kale as I’m just introducing it to her, celery, cilantro, parsley, red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce and romain lettuce.
And one with Abby
wow! its like a real persons food!
This is my twos plate tonight – it’s romaine, water cress, celery, broccoli and one slice of apple chopped up into a lot of little pieces so everyone can get some. (Remember, this is shared between two rabbits and one bird, the bird usually gets the first pick). They only get the fruit added to their salads about once a month, though they do sometimes get a couple of craisins if they’re being really good.
My salad plates look more like Abby’s and Jersey’s.
Nova asked about storage/keeping them fresh — there might be some additional tips in an old discussion https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tab…fault.aspx (DON’T REPLY TO THAT POST THOUGH– TO OLD)
I used to store my greens in a large tubberware at the bottom of my fridge, but I got a mini fridge off of Craigslist $20 bucks I think. Anyway, I do the bag method — where I poke holes in a plastic bag, and then after washing my greens (taking off excess wet with a salad spinner), I put a paper towel around them and put them in the fridge).
They last up for a week. I have found though with basil that I don’t wash that first, keep it as dry as possible and put it in a bag with a paper towel, but I don’t poke holes in it. Needs to be more air tight.
Holy cow, people!…if I fed Mimzy that much green, he’d explode! 0_o He gets the green parts (no stalk) of one green leaf lettuce frond, two leaf stalks from italian parsley (no stems) and three shavings off an organic carrot…maybe some mint before bed if he seems to want some (just a few leaves of that).
My other two cannot have greens from the store, they get poopy butt no matter what I’ve tried.
Even dandelion leaves had to be measured out, maybe one or two per day, except for Mimz who could eat three or more and the flowers, plus a handful of fresh hayseed grass (green timothy) and plantain or strawberry if I could find it. He handled his forage much better than the man made stuff.
You guys must spend a fortune at the produce counter! 0_o
Lol, BB. I keep joking that I need to get Hodari her own little fridge.
What helped put it in perspective for me, just HOW MUCH greens the average bunny should be getting at minimum a day, was reading the labels of the packaged salad mixes. The companies say a serving is approximately two cups (or, by weight, 3oz), exactly what the HRS guidelines recommend for a six pound bunny. An entire clamshell package from Earthbound Farm is only 5 oz! (Well, they come in another size, too, but 5 oz is maybe the most common.) Dole’s bagged salad mixes say 3oz is a serving also, but they estimate that 3 oz is equal to only “about 1 1/2 cups.” Since I’m not just feeding “lettucey” stuff like they put in those mixes, I just go ahead and weigh what I give her. It makes it more precise anyway. I just can’t believe she eats so much! She eats a bigger salad than I’ve ever eaten.
Aw, I miss the days when I gave my bunnies big, greatlooking salads like all you guys are feeding. I felt so good when I went to the store and got them a whole bunch of different stuff, plus apples and bananas, and they LOVED it. Unfortunately, my little BunBun is pretty delicate when it comes to his diet. He was having all kinds of problems with poopy butt and bladder sludge, and I was really getting discouraged. I had to completely cut everything out except for hay, and start adding one thing at a time. Now it’s no more treats except papaya pieces and a VERY occasional bit of apple/banana, and all they get for greens is those prepared lettuce mixes (spring mix is the name) and Italian parsley only (BunBun doesn’t like curly parsley- isn’t that strange how many of our bunnies prefer one or the another?). I feel kinda guilty giving them the mixed salad, but it seems that BunBun tolerates the lettuce greens in them quite well, and it’s impossible to buy that many different lettuces separately. And every time I get adventurous and give them Swiss Chard and even regular red/green lettuce from a whole head, he gets runny poop. I guess it’s just the larger leaves of the whole lettuces that set him off. So that’s about it for greens for my bunnies. Poor Nelli can eat anything, but she can only have what her little hubby eats.
I’m gonna try to get some exotic lettuces at one of the fancy produce stores around here and see how it goes. Wish me luck. Most likely it will result in a butt bath for BunBun and lots of cleaning rugs/furniture for me :/ .

Ok. I will cut down on the banana. Scribbles won’t mind, as long as he has his greens. He is more nuts about parsley, collard greens, kale and cilantro than his sweets.
You’re lucky Scribbles wont mind! Samson goes bonkers for bananas haha, I always feel bad I can only give her a tiny bit

Scribbles gets such a variety of veggies that he doesn’t miss any one of them not being included. His favorite right now is broccoli stems. Parsley and mustard greens are also high on his list of “must eat first”.
Sammy’s greens go in her ceramic cabbage bowl, shown on the left behind the pink water dish.
That’s about how much I give her – to the top but not overflowing. For me it’s one large handful after ripping up some leaves, with one baby carrot. She no longer likes red leaf lettuce, so it’s just the green varieties. The others are right about limiting bananas to no more than a slice or two a day or less frequently, and only as a treat.
they get something like this twice a day. The other day they had these rose petals, green leaf lettuce, celery and carrots. Today they had cilantro, mint and romaine. They eat a HUGE variety of things now and it all seems to agree with them!
whoa – sorry that is so huge! I don’t know how to make it smaller
