I informed Jessica on Friday night that her days of sexual harassment will be coming to an end….I have scheduled Leo’s neuter.  After a great deal of debate and input from this site and our vet, I decided that it would be better for Jessi not to be Leo’s hump buddy.  She grunted in agreement…at least I think it was agreement.

So we are stocked w/ critical care, baby food, and strawberry ensure in order to prepare for the post anesth blahs (which are common for Leo).  We are considering letting him stay at the vet for 24 hrs post surgery to monitor hydration levels & post anesth food intake….What’s everyone’s opinion on this?  Also any concerns that this will affect his bond w/ Jessica?

        Thanks for any input.

Leo gets terrible post-anesth eating issues.  After his last rear molar filings, it took us several weeks to get his appetite and weight gain up to pre-anesth par.  I think it was over a month b/f we got him back up to his previous weight.  It was during that last recovery that my vet recommended the strawberry ensure.  He said that most buns like the strawberry flavor…I don’t, but hey I’m not a bun.  We would mix the ensure w/ critical care and then just to ensure only.  It is ok b/c its not a dairy product, there systems can tolerate it.  I don’t know if all bun vets would agree, so it might be at the recommendation of a vet only.  Its his weight issue that has caused us to postpone his neuter for so long.  He’s gotten much more hump happy since Christmas, so we are doing this for Jessi’s well being.  Sometimes she can’t catch a break in the potty or during salad time.

glad to hear he’s got an appointment scheduled! i am sure Jessi will be relieved! I’d consider bringing her with him to the vet, since bonds can be broken even over vet visits, since the sick bunny doesn’t smell right. It likely will be a comfort to him that she’s there with him too.

I’ve never heard of ensure being recommended for rabbits to be honest. I’ve heard of vets switching bunnies to alfalfa, adding oat groats or supplementing in critical care to encourage weight gain.

I will definately talk to the vet about bringing Jessi w/ him.  Maybe they can both spend the night to make sure he’s eating well when I pick him up.  I’ll talk to the vet as the date gets closer.

I thought the ensure was kinda strange….I actually double checked it w. another bunny vet and she said its ok.  Its not recommended as regular thing b/c it is sweet.  It was my understanding that it keeps hydration up and fills the belly w/ nutrients.  Its also a good flavor for bunnies picky about critical care…which Leo is.
