I took Leo in for another neuter attempt.  I believe I’ve lost track at this point…but I think this is attempt number 4.  In the past, either another pet required unplanned medical care or Leo has had other issues that required presedence.  Today, I dropped off both Leo & Jessica.  His been very aggressive w/ his humping attempts during the last 2 weeks, so it was absolutely necessary to get him in.

Of course he got one last “session” in w/ Jessica when I put them both in their carrier.  Jessica looked at me like..”thanks mom.  this is what I’ve been avoiding.”  I should know this afternoon how everything went.  The only issue that may cause delay, is Jessica has really been nipping him during his “advances” so I think he has a few small nicks on his face.

I’ll keep everyone posted.  Let’s cross our fingers and hold our rabbit’s foot/feet really tight (though I don’t think the rabbit would appreciate that)!!!

I just got the call from my vet….LEO IS NOW A EUNUCH!!!!!  I can’t believe that it is done.  I believe that Jessica will be very happy now that her boyfriend will no longer be trying to get his humpy on.  He was recovering when the vet called, but the vet said he did very well and had no anesthesia issues.  I will pick him up tonight after 7pm.  PHEW!

I just got my female done today too.  I have her home already but I am concerned.  She has not eaten or drank yet.  She has been sleeping.  I am just hoping that throughout the night I can see that she has eaten.  I feel so bad!!!

congrats SLS!!! finally! quick healing Leo!

kellygirl… it’s not unusual for them to not want to eat for awhile. they give pain meds at the vet so she might be out of it all night. try to give her a few sprigs of fresh parsley, a bowl of water and make sure she has some hay overnight. keep an eye on her. the girls take longer to recover b/c it’s a more extensive surgery. did the vet give you pain meds to take home? make sure she has something soft inside her cage and nothing for her to jump up on. she needs to do as little moving as possible for a couple days at least. if she is still not eating, drinking or pooping tomorrow, you might want to call your vet.

                      Beka,

Thanks, I did call the vet and they said to call them in the am if she has not eaten yet. She did have pain meds and I am supposed to give her more tomorrow am again. Why a bowl of water? I only have her bottle in there? Is she not able to drink from that? I only had a little parley and she did nibble it just now but that is it. It was only a pinch though.

Yay for Leo! I’m glad to hear he did so well

kellygirl97 – it is quite normal for females to have a tougher time recovering from their spay than for males to recover from being neutered. A bowl of water is a good idea as opposed to a water bottle as it takes less effort for the bunny to drink water from a bowl.

Continue trying to get your girl to eat some vegetables, try breaking parsley and cilantro in half and placing them in her cage, the scent will be stronger if you break them in half which might tempt her even more. Make sure to keep her in a quiet and peaceful room while she recovers. Once a day it is a good idea to examine her spay scar to make sure it is healing properly. It is normal for it to look red and possible have some dried blood around it, but keep an eye out for any new bleeding or infection.

a pinch of parsley is good tho… it’s something in her belly at least. do you have any other veggies or herbs she really likes? make her a small bowl for overnight and she will hopefully nibble on them a little bit. i suggested a bowl b/c some buns will drink out of that more willingly than a bottle b/c it’s lower. they don’t have to stand up to get to it. or give her the veggies very wet and leave some water in the bottom of her bowl.

Thanks for asking. Lulu had to go back to the vet this am. because she had not eaten. I gave her more pain meds this am. and then gave her some water in a syringe. I just gave her some mussy food and got her to eat a small spoonful. Of course, by the time we got to the vet the medicine has started working and she was doing much better. She started eating a little hay when I put it to her mouth. The vet was satisfied that she had enough spunk and would start eating today. When we got home she ate all her hay and is sitting up. I guess she is doing fine now! Still not eating anything but her hay but I guess that is something. It was so sad. This am. she actually cried when I picked her up – she was in pain. Glad I have 3 more days of pain meds. The vet kind of acted like I was a worry wart and said it wasn’t really a problem that she had not eaten but he didn’t charge me so. All is well.

Hope Leo is doing well too!

I firmly believe that vets are like doctors…you have to be your own advocate and not worry about their opinion of you. If you think you need to go in, don’t worry that the vet might think you are over reacting-you know your bunny better then anyone!

Have you offered any treats-like fresh greens or bananas? I’d bet she’d gobble those up!

i’m glad you took Lulu in kellygirl… i prefer to be overly cautious than not careful enough… but it sounds like she’s doing better already. feel better Lulu!

Sorry for the delay but Leo had a slight setback.  I caught him licking his b#lls, or the void of them!  The vet said if he did this to let them know immediately.  I caught him doing this the next morning.  I took him back yesterday evening.  He had opened one of the incisions.  They stapled him shut & gave me antiobiotics.  She also said they were kind of swollen.  She told me to keep an eye on them, several peeks a day.

It looked alright this morning and afternoon (got home from work about 2 hrs ago).  He had decreased his food slighty, but it looks like that got back on track last night.  It was kind of cute when I brought him & Jessica home from the hospital…he wasn’t really eating like his usual self.  Jessi would go lay next to him and eat w/ him, she also pulled out veggies from the salad for him.  Anytime she was next to him, he ate.

The good news is NO Weight loss!  I got his weight just b/f surgery and even last night when I had to take him back in.  His weight is fine & steady.  He goes back in for a b#ll check on Monday.  I can’t help it, it makes me crack up when I say it.

Kellygirl:  Where did you end up going?  You might also want to add some veggie or banana baby food to help move things along.  Jessica had to be force fed critical care post spay…so I think you’re doing pretty good.

On an additional note:  Jessi had her yearly exam the day of Leo’s surgery.  The vet told me that she was the healthiest bunny she’s seen in a looong time.  She said that Jess was the perfect example of good bunny parenting.  She reminded me that often people only bring their buns in when sick, not for annual check ups.  Though she did say that she is kind of tubby & could lose some weight….but she said that all & all she looks and sounds excellent!!!!  Yeah Jessica!

and honestly… i don’t think Jessica would accept anything less than superb parenting… ;o)

Skunklionshow – Glad everything is well for you and wow I am glad I didn’t have to go through too much with my girl after her spay. Thanks for all your info on the vets. I actually found a place called North Penn Hospital right near me. I went on an initial visit for 32 dollars and the guy seemed to know all the stuff I asked him and some stuff he told me before I asked him. So they actually only charged me 100 dollars for the surgury and meds. She seems to be doing well now. I have to check her stiches because i saw her licking there. She is up and perky though and eating.

Leo is doing VERY well!  His staples have held up just fine.  The swelling has gone done a lot.  I haven’t had to force feed him at all…which is a major plus.  I haven’t been successful w/ injecting his raisins w/ his antiobiotic..I don’t know maybe their too small, so I’ve been mixing them w/ baby food.  He hasn’t had a problem eating that at all  However, I have to keep Jessica away by giving her multiple treats (I just can’t win).  He goes in for his staple re-check on Weds evening.  They will remove them, if all looks good.  Now if only he’d stop peeing everywhere!  He didn’t have this issue b/f the neuter…should I be concerned?
