Hello! I’ve read over some of the other posts on molting / shedding, but I still have a question. How long does it last? CJ has been shedding for like a month. He was shedding in the spring when I first got him, but this one is alot worse. I’m having to vaccum out his cage nearly everyday, and huge clumps come out whenever I touch him. I keep my apt at around 78-80 degrees. Is this length of time normal for a big shed?

FYI: 80 degrees is a bit warm for a domestic bunny.  Though I know bunnies that are used to it if they grew up in hot weather.  But in general if the temperatures reach 80 degrees, you should do a few things to keep your bunny cool.  LIke keep a frozen water bottle or two in his cage.  Get large ceramic slate tiles for you CJ to hang out on as they stay rather cool even in hot weather.  Rotating fans are also good to add.

In regards to how long it takes for a big shed.  Some do explosion molts which can last just a few days, while others molt for weeks.  Usually rabbits do two big molts, and two smaller molts(sometimes hardly noticable) within a year.

It’s also good to groom him more often during this time and make sure he’s drinking and eating enough hay as fiber is needed to digest all the hair he’ll be grooming off of himself.
