Layla passed away today.  It came out of nowhere.  About two years ago she had some issues with a tooth root abcess but after lots of care and medication it finally healed.

Yesterday she seemed not herself.  Not sick but just wasn’t quite as lively as usual and a little withdrawn.  Not enough to really worry me but enough that I definitely noticed something.  This morning when I woke up she was lethargic and hadn’t eaten her dinner from last night (which included her favorite:  basil).  I knew something serious was wrong.  I called the vet, got an appt a couple of hours later and went in to have her looked at.  Her nose looked runny but other than that and being a little wobbly she seemed ok.  But while we were waiting for the vet to come into the exam room she started gasping for breath and the inside of her ears turned blue.  The boyfriend ran out and got someone and they rushed her to the back to be put on oxygen.  They did some xrays but found nothing to alert them.  They were going to flush out her tear ducts but she passed away before that happened.

I feel terrible, like I should have known something was wrong sooner.  I still don’t know what happened.  Not sure what could have caused this turn about from a happy, binkying bunny just Sunday to a dead bunny this morning.  She was about 2 months shy of 4 years old.  I’m heartbroken and I don’t know what to do.

I am so sorry. It’s especially difficult when it happens so sudden and unexpected, and you don’t know what caused it. Right now it must feel awful but after a while it will start getting better. She was such a pretty bunny. Binky free Layla.

I’m sorry, she was gorgeous. It is a cruel truth that with bunnies, sometimes you don’t know what their health problems are and they leave. Sending healing vibes to you and your boyfriend that your grieving will heal soon and be replaced by happy memories of her binkies.

I’m so sorry to hear about Layla. Believe me, there was nothing else you could have done – you did everything right. From your description it even came as a shock to the vet staff also, and was very sudden. Only a necropsy could determine what was the cause of her death, and that’s an expensive procedure that won’t bring her back. Bunnies need to be seen by a vet when they are just a little off, and that’s just what you did. They are fragile little beasties and it can happen suddenly, but it’s a shock when it does.

Hugs to you and remember that you gave her lots of love. She had a good life with you.

Thanks all. Its been a very hard few days. I’ve never been through this before and Layla was my best friend. My house just feels so empty. I put her pen away and threw away her bedding. I just couldn’t look at it.
