Latest success in the litter battle

My buns have gotten better about their litter habits, since I started opening their door as soon as I get up (though, if I don’t do it, they make a HUGE mess outside the box to say they are unhappy at being confined… brats). But they still leave a pretty big mess every day for me to clean up (the droppings aren’t a big deal, but the urine, ewww). So I added litter screens to their boxes, so they don’t have to stand in their own wet mess while they are in there. They used the litter boxes more last night because of it. \o/ I put paper towels over the mesh, leaving the edges uncovered so their feet don’t have to be on the hard surface (they won’t abide hay in their boxes).

I swear, if they could just _tell_ me what they like this would be so much easier. lol Shame there is no such thing as a bunny mind reader. But, I know some have had issues similar to mine, so maybe some of the things I find out about mine will help the rest.

my girls can be slobs, some days worse than others, inside their pens there are cocopuff to sweep up but no pee outside the pan, but when they are in the rec room they are pretty good, maybe a cocopuff here and there. I have not tried the screen in the box cause they don’t lounge there but one does dig and I’m afraid she would catch a nail. I put many layers of newpapers down under the litter and it obsorbs all the pee.

What really made a difference for me was clicker training Totoro. Have you already tried clicker training? Or is that something you’d think about trying?

I can understand your frustration, Totoro was stray as a baby so I think that’s why he never really was well litter trained and once he was bonded to Wilbur and given free range it got worse. I had to clean up pee from the carpet everyday. Though I know you’ve been going through this struggle for quite a while now :/

Both of mine were perfect with their boxes before being bonded, when they bonded is when they stopped – it’s pretty much brattiness that is causing it, not sure if clicker training would rid them of being brats. (If the door is closed, they make a huge mess to show displeasure, if it is open they only leave some stray poops) lol They both want to be free range, but Stickers is a carpet destroyer (she’s under a year) so not possible at the moment. The litter screens made them use it a little bit when the doors are closed, so I guess anything can help so it might work. They will do anything for craisins…

Lazee, neither of mine lounge either, but Powders always been a bit picky about his litter box. When I used newspaper, if he used the box once, it was soiled and untouchable and I had to change it before he’d use it again haha

You know what I’ve been meaning to tell you to try? You might already, but I found if I sprinkle their food all over their pen instead of in one spot, they poop more in their box. I don’t know if they just don’t like their pellets where their poop is? But its reallly helped
