        Hi everyone,

We had to take my 8 year old Netherland dwarf Rabbit, Ellie, to the emergency vet tonight after we horrifically noticed her pee blood. It only happened once and she wasn’t showing any signs of pain up until that point (eating, drinking, playing with her brother). After an xray the vet found one kidney stone, and some small calcium deposits.

She was given iv fluids, ate some hay, and was pooping normally at the vet.

She’s now on Baytril twice a day, and a pain med with morphine in the name twice a day. Other than that, we were told to repeat blood work next week to check kidney function, but that was basically the treatment plan…

Does anyone have any other advice or things we could do to help her? I really hope I don’t wake up to more bloody pee-my heart can’t take it.

I’m so sorry to hear that. I have no experience in this problem. But I read about it on a site. It may be good to keep eating fresh greens. Make you bunny a lot of exercise. You can take a water dispenser to encourage it to drink water. I am writing the link below. Talking about kidney stones below the urinary guide.

Was it pee with red blobs or streaks in it? Uniformly red pee is completely normal in rabbits. Blood in urine is usually normal looking pee with red blobs in it.

Yes it was like a red tinted pee (like almost pink) with tiny red blobs.

Interesting. Kidney stones in rabbits are often asymptomatic (that is, until they cause a problem). Perhaps the blood is from a kidney stone passing. If that’s the case perhaps the other one will move too? Obviously, this is painful, so that’s why the vet gave you strong pain medication. The danger would be a stone getting stuck somewhere.
