Hello, I posted back in April about my Clarissa who was diagnosed with kidney faliure. I’m happy to report she is still doing well. We’re enjoying everyday to it’s fullest. She’s getting her fluids 3x a week, lots of leafy lettuce and fresh herbs. I came across something called “Kidney Rejuvenator” made for pets. http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/kidney_rejuvenator.html . It claims to be safe for rabbits. Has anyone tried this? The ingredients look useful.

Glad she’s doing well! I would ask the vet about this – it looks interesting to me, but better to make sure your vet feels comfortable with you using this. I do like the idea of using herbs myself.

I would not recommend this product. Take a read here at an article my local HRS put out by Dr. Guerrera (one of our top rabbit vets)

              http://www.coloradohrs.com/articles/medical_buyer_beware.asp

Rabbit Health 101 does however list the use of dandelion tincture, milk thistle, coats aloe drink and lactulose (which you need a prescription from a vet for).  Talk to your vet about all of these, as there are certain cautions to be made like the aloe drink “increases the absorption of antibiotics.”

I assume that you have been here for their library of links to info:

The Kidney rejuvenator formula contains no milk thistle or danelion- with is interesting since that’s what is actually reccomended. I got both of thoose at the health food store yesterday. I also got Aloe and black cherry concentrate to mix with. I read that black cherry helps with inflamation and pain and is also high in antioxidents. She has hip disease so I thought it was a good thing to add without worry simce it’s just juice.
Does anyone have a dosage calcuator for the tinctures? It’s 20-30 drops 5x a day for people. I’ve figured 6-10 drops 2x a day??

Cocobear, I’ll reiterate – you should check with a vet before administering any kind of supplements to a rabbit. They could be harmful and/or interact in a bad way. Just because it is “natural” and has certain effects for humans does not mean it is safe or recommended. If anything happens to your rabbit, I would be very sad.

I am glad to hear she is doing better. What good news.

Regarding black cherry – that comes up on the toxic plant level from “The House Rabbit Handbook”. It is considered a Class 1 (which is the most dangerous class) but they also mention that many class one plants – can have the toxins taken out by drying or or extraction, but I have no idea if what you got has the toxins taken out.

Regarding the aloe vera – some places have that on the toxic list for bunnies http://www.allearssac.org/poison.html. But I also see that is not listed in other places like the House Rabbit Handbook.

Also, some things may not be toxic at much lower levels. Garlic is example of this.

My rabbit-savvy vet also knows quite a bit about alternative medicines and recommends them from time to time. But since our bunnies digestive systems can so sensitive, I always check with my vet first and hopefully you have a vet that is knows quite a bit about this kind of stuff and can guide you properly.

                      Helloworld!!

                        P L E A S E  check with a RABBIT SAVVY vet about this!!

[this somehow does NOT sound right to me]

drug interactions occur with natural remedies, and can even be deadly!!

you could also email Dana Krempels about this.

                        I’m worried.

                          Hi Everyone,
Just an update-Clarissa took ill last night. I brought her in this morning fully expecting to put her alseep. We did bloodwork and I took her home to wait. We were shocked to learn that her kidney values are almost at normal levels!! The vet said she’d never seen a rabbit make such a turnaround! BUT… we still don’t know why she is feeling so poorly= The vet supects gas/GI problems. I think she is having some hip pain. She is having such a hard time getting her back end around, and just lies flat with her face on the floor. The vet wants to give her a shot of steroids and some pain meds. I’m not so sure about steroids??
I did ask the vet for reccomendations for herbal supplements and she said wasn’t familiar with natural meds. I stopped giving Clarissa anything at all. She did say that milk thistle was ok and I found a doseage chart for it on another pet site, so I will start up with that again. She also reccomended giving a horse feed that is fortified with Glucosamine. Has anyone heard of that?
Thanks for all who posted. I will be away for a while after friday, so I’ll post an update at the beging of august. My mom and husband will take loving care of Clarissa while I’m gone.

My vet does not like to give rabbits steroids as they are very sensitive to them unless it’s a very critical situation but that’s just my vet.

Poor Clarissa, please keep us updated. It’s so hard not knowing what you should do.

Cocobear, I am sorry for what Clarissa is going through. It does sound odd and I hope that you can get to the bottom of it soon. I would not give a rabbit steroids and I would not let my vet do it either. If her hip is bothering her, you can find rabbit food that is fortified with myristol, feed 1-2 pellets twice daily. My local HRS recommends it and that is where I get it from and it really seems to help with arthritis.

I took her again to the vet again last night, this time a different vet- who said she is not having GI issues. She thought it was knee and hip pain or possibly one of her kidneys is not doing as well as the other. The vet gave us cosequin since she is not responding to the metacam at all. If she is not better today I will put her to sleep tommorow. The vet thinks there is not a lot left to try with her and she is so old. The next step is daily prednisone- which can have risks. I don’t want to put her through anymore. She still enjoys a treat and I think it’s best to let her go before she gets to that bad point where it’s all pain.

I put Clarissa to sleep this morning. She hasn’t got up to eat on her own since saturday, or even sit up for more than a couple minutes. She would only get up to eat her favorite veggies/fruit that I brought to her. We discovered a growth under her arm that we(the vet and I ) had at first assumed was a fluid pocket. This moring it looked like it was a growth- startng to abcess. The vet took a biopsy before we put her down. She enjoyed some favorite herbs and raisins with Evan and then she received a sedative and then the injection. It was so fast and peaceful. I was so thankful that she was able to relax enough to enjoy a treat in her final moments. She was a lucky bunny, living a long, spolied life with us. We buried her in a patch of thyme in the garden where she loved to play.
Thanks everyone for their kind thoughts and support.
                                      ~Robin
